Thanks gadget for looking out. I will let you know when I want one. Really soon though. B4 I put the fipk I did notice the holes in the light and would want a better filter to take dirt out. Gadget I'll keep you posted when I am ready

I read a study on Tundra Solutions on this subject and the consensus was that the OEM Toyota paper filter was the best way to go, from both a cost and filtering standpoint.

I had the K&N Drop in but just replaced it with the TRD cone filter which was a huge improvement. Had to custom make a brackett for it though.

TRD is K&N isnt it? same design, i think TRD farms it to K&N

regarding AGRunner06, you may need to clean your MAF sensor with electronics cleaner solution (check http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...tenancep5.html)

I put in an Amsoil not long after I bought my Runner since they came highly recommended here. Still have paper in my wife's Accord though... hmm

Me too. Amsoil has no plans to make one for the 3.0 V6 since they don't have the equipment. A bunch of us tried to see if they would make a filter for us but the answer was a resounding no. That's why I run the K&N. At this point, with 160k on the odometer and the little engine struggling to get my truck moving I think killing it a little quicker so I can swap something else in is a good idea.

I run stock but I wouldn't say its paper at all. More of a fiberous material. Once I put in a Fram or something that was paper and it killed my mileage.

L33T35T 4Runner-I would like to see a picture of your filter box. Never seen anything but round filters for the 3.0. If you have a different filter box, it may have been fitted from another model or year, and may have a larger filter area.

Ok, her is the TRD filter installed. I really like it, sounds great and good power. Notice the cusom made aluminum support brackett (mad by me and I got it right the first time! It pays to be a manufactureing student with access to a huge shop!)

I just bought an Amsoil TS 162 for my 4th Gen V8 and it doesn't seem to fit "perfect" Does anyone have a pic of one installed on a 4th gen?

I use a australian brand called Uni-Filter,it is a drop in type & has the same flow rate of K&n filters,& a low 4 micron filtratoin value.
plus its half the price of K&N filters.

It seems that when AMSOIL redigned their filter line they took a great filter for the Toyota trucks and turned it into less then great. WHY???

I have seen one of those UNI filters. Very interesting design indeed.

That is exactly what I hate about my K&N...tired of listening to that d*mn thing anymore. My truck is loud enough as it is.
In the future what I want to do is go with some sort of large bore snorkel, an '82 Supra air flow meter and everything shifted over to the passenger side.
Hopefully, better air flow and quieter as a result.

The '82 Supra AFM has a large inlet. Instead of the tiny restrictive rectangle on later afms, that year has a large circular inlet (3" I think) that allows for much better airflow.
In the extreme version, I have even considered lately trying to figure out how to modify the plenum so the throttle body would be set up like a side draft carb. I don't know that it would make a huge difference, but a big bore throttle body with a straight shot to a "big bore" afm would seem like it would get air much easier.
I'm only considering it since I am also considering going with similar mods to the 22re in my '93 4Runner that I have in my '85; 94mm pistons, big bore throttle body, oversize valves, taller cam, ported head yada yada yada...

Sounds like a purely perfomance based mod than a Gas mileage improvement.you will have to lets us know when you do it.

Actually, it should help with both. I have long noticed that the 22res seem to run rich at wider throttle and have wondered if it is the result of just not getting enough air in to meet the needs of the engine.
In theory anyway, a better air to fuel ratio should result in better power and fuel economy.
I confess however, that I am currently getting just shy of 25-26mpg out of my '93 4Runner with a stock 22re in it and am kind of afraid to mess with it. My '85 with the modded engine (and 31" MTRs as a variable) only gets around 20mpg. Then again, I like to play too much with the '85. That VROOM! sound is hard to leave alone
