Aftermarket sunroof

Aftermarket sunroof
I have a 00 4runner and would like to add a sunroof. Anyone here have any knowledge about the prices and the quality of doing an aftermarket job. Is it a good idea or will I be paying for an expensive leaky hole in the roof of my truck.

I guess so but with the price of gas in the summer I would rather have the windows open and a sunroof than run the a/c. By the way do 4runners get the same gas mileage with the a/c on. My old car a 96 mazda I could practically see the needle drop while the a/c was on.

I wouldnt buy a vehicle with an aftermarket sun roof. Its just something else to cause problems. They dont have a drain tube or a water channel to drain the water away from the seal.I had one and had to keep lube on the seal to keep it from leaking.the pop up dosent come with a shade so guess what all that sun light just makes the inside hotter.Keep your money.Been there already.

check with asc .. they offer good warranties on their sunroofs.
but the sunroof that comes stock on a 4runner is huge! I love my sunroof gives it a nice open feel when your sitting in traffic, and just cranking the tunes.

Most responses seem to be from people who have sunroofs and don't use them or "I once heard of a sunroof that leaked" stories. Take a look at sunroofs offered by good companies like ASC and Webasto. Both companies do port-installed sunroofs on cars before they hit the new car dealerships and I have personally seen ASC installed sunroofs on new Tacomas at the dealership. The quality of these sunroofs are the same as factory and you should never have a problem with a professionally installed, good quality sunroof. Just keep the drain tubes clean.
My 1994 pickup had the factory-installed flipup sunroof and I really miss it (my 2000 4runner doesn't have one). I plan on dropping the $1k to have one installed by either ASC or Webasto. They're nice to have even in bad weather--pop them up and the weather stays out and the windows stay fog-free.

Agreed. A factory sunroof CANNOT leak, unless the drains get clogged.
The aftermarket OEM types are just as good.
The $200 cut-a-hole-and-bolt-it-in type should not leak where they bolt in unless the installer was a real numbnu$$, but the fit of the glass to the seal is typically not too reliable. I would avoid those.
But for me, I had the 85 with sunroof for 15 years, never used it. Never took the shade out either - it was cold in winter and hot in summer. I don't miss it. My GF on the other hand would be lost without hers. She uses it every day. To each their own. (She needs it to keep a constant supply of fresh fuel flowing in - she's a blonde...
