My wifes blower works sometimes and sometimes not. When it works it will work on all 4 speeds, but sometimes it just shuts off or switches speeds on its own. Sometimes I can turn it on and it will run for 10 seconds or so then quit and if I push the off button then high button again it will come back on for 10 sec again. etc. Anyone have any idea what this maY be?

 

Well the reaistor should be to the left of the blower MTr up against the firewall on passenger side under glove box area.

Usually a sign of the resistor though is only operates on the highest setting.

In your case, I would be suspect of the actual blower motor. I just replaced one in a 2001 navigator that had the same symptoms as yours and turned out to be a MTR not the resistor.

Could always pull the resistor out and check it. As well as the MTR. Just pull the harness on the MTR and put power and ground to it. If she fires up, most likely not your issue.

X2 on it being the motor itself and not the resistor. If it was the resistor it would always work, but only on high.

 

I already replaced the motor 2 months ago. I had a mechanic friend tell me the same thing you guys did. He said that I may have just gotten another bad motor from advanced. Well, yesterday I returned the blower motor to advanced and exchanged it for another new one. It worked all day yesterday, but even the old one would work fine sometimes for days at a time. we'll see. Someone also said it could be a short in the control switch, but I cant find a control switch anywhere for this vehicle even to check pricing.

 

The second motor I put in has now worked since the last post I made. I guess I did get a bad motor from advanced the first time. Thanks.

 

Shortly after my last post that the new motor was working fine now, It started acting funny as well. I startred palaying with it and found that if I only use the three lowest speeds it will stay on. If I hit the high button it runs on high for 5 to 10 seconds then shuts off. If I push the off button then any other speed but high, it will stay on. I was using the auto function most of the time, so when it would try to switch to high, this would shut it down.
So, it works on all speeds but high. If it was the resistor It should only work on high right?? I dont want to buy one and still be having the same problem because for some reason that part is ridiculously expensive for this year 4runner.

 

It sounds like a bad switch not the resistor or the blower motor. The resistor steps down voltage on speeds below high, on high the resistor is bypassed and a full 12 volts is applied to the motor.

 

Disconnect the resistor and look for burnt wires in the connector

 

Im going to take the resistor out and look at it as soon as I get some time. I was thinking the switch could be bad as well, It is a sport edition and has one of the fancy push button switches with the auto climate control setting and I cant find a switch listed as a part anywhere I look. I don't know If I can even buy the switch itself.

 

WOW. I just looked up the climate control panel for this vehicle in which the switch is built into, and that sucker is $900. I wonder if you can just replace the switch or if you have to replace the whole thing? I think I will just have to live with it at that price.

 

No need to remove the resistor, just look at the wiring. I don't remember if the auto climate even has one, but on the tacos and sequoias, burnt harness to the resistor is very common. GM dealer typically stocks the connector and pigtail. Yes Toyota used GM components. Probably why they burn up.
Be prepared to sell your first born if you need a climate control assy.
