I have always referred to my 1987 Hilux as a 4th generation, but I am seeing people calling it a 2nd generation, Whats the deal with that?

 

Toyota first made 4x4 pickups in 1979. The generations refer to 4x4 trucks only.
1st gen- 1979-1983
2nd gen- 1984-1988
3rd gen- 1989-1995

After '95 they switched to Tacoma's

1st gen-1995-2004
2nd gen-2005-present

4Runners-
1st gen- 1984-1989
2nd gen- 1990-1995
3rd gen- 1995-2002
4th gen- 2002-2009
5th gen- 2009-present

T-100-
1st&only gen- 1993-1998

Tundra-
1st gen- 2002-2006
2nd gen- 2007-present

Figures it's clear as mud. It's a MUDDER thing.

wikipedia covers the generations but not from the mudder perspective.

I knew there was a 2 year gap between the T-100 and Tundra, must have got my brain confused and just thought 2002. Haha

Was the FJ45 technically the 1st Toyota pickup truck?

When did the FJ45 come out compared to the Stout?

 

Toyota Stout was released in 1954 it was the first Toyota pickup. The fj45 was released in 1960.

According to that wikipedia article, a 3rd generation Stout was produced, that as far as I can tell, looks almost identical to a 1st generation 4x4 pickup..
Anyone got more info on this vehicle?

From what I've read, they were 2wd only.
Says they may have been produced until 2000. Would like to check one of those out.

Can't help myself from posting another Wiki page.. Toyopet SG has some good classic lines.

The wiki refrence link for that stout mentioned has Body panels listed. Long box, short box, and 4 door OH my.. Options Options and more Options. The US got screwed.. And don't get too excited the convertible is a tease it's a bed canopy once you get past the thrumbnails.

 

So the '79-'83 Toyota "pickup" is obviously known as a Hilux in other countries but also a "Stout"? I'm curious if the 3rd gen Stout made in 2000 looks identical to our 1st gens, or if they updated some things/changed with the Hilux's body changes..

There are two forms of stout the original and the lite, the US version RK41 was a lite and why the L or RK41-L the rest of the world had RK40 that was replaced by the RK43 lite stouts or 1500 that had independent coil front suspension. The RK45, RK47, RK100 and RK101 were front beam axle with leaf springs as were the third generation hilux style RK110, RK111 and YK110 had leaf front springs that were the same as the first generation hilux four wheel drives. So actually the first generation four wheel drives are actually a four wheel drive version of the stout and the only hilux that was sold as a stout is in certain south american countries is known as the stout II when the original stouts ended production in 2000
