what axles for big horsepower?

i happen to have an LS6 (405hp405tq) laying around and im wanting to throw it in the yota. i also plan to do headwork and throw in a cam, 4l80E tranny with whatever transfer case chevy uses.. so im looking at around 480hp at the flywheel. what axles front and rear will take the abuse?

has anybody done anything similar as far as axles go? i dont really need help as far as the engine goes, its the rest of the drivetrain thats got me thinking.

mainly because everything has an offset pumpkin, which in the back is going to be a hassle, up front is no big deal.

but up front i need to be able to turn as well.. and ive never even SAS'd before so im a little lost

If it is the 88 4runner in your sig I would put some flavor of 1ton under it, like a 60/AAM 10.5 My brother got an AAM 10.5 from a 06 Chevy. It is basically a 14bolt with disk brakes and a factory e-brake. If you are rich some diamond axles for better clearance and strength options.

Meh, most likely D44. The problem is with 14B etc to have any ground clearance at all you need to run 37's or bigger, and that starts to add up to a lot of money.

If you're running 33's or less, I would go with Toyota axles with cromoly stuff, your other option is to go 37+ and either 14bolt/AAM, D60, Ford 9", or just go crazy and do 2.5T Rockwells on 40+ tires.

EDIT: If you can handle the offset diff, the Toyota 9" from a 80 series Landcruiser (with elocker) is a nice axle.

Dana 60 Fr 70 rear... 35 spline shafts chromo inners and outers and be done with it. 400hp will waste an 8" in the blink of an eye unless you drive around like old people get busy all day.

lol great responses. thx guys.

i didnt post this in newbie tech.. but i got good answers so who cares.. besides me..

to respond to how i use my truck, i use the truck to get around town a lil bit, to go off in some mud a little bit especially during hunting season.. and do some rock crawling trails every other year or so currently. i just want to do all of the above reliably.. or at least have solid drivetrain to decrease my chances of failure

thx for the replies now that i have a direction ill do some research and see what i can come up with.

there is a local guy witha monstrous lift on a 4runner just like mine that is a purpose built mud rig, i can just look his over for ideas and fab up some of my own stuff. working with metal might as well be eating to me.. it seems i was born to do it.

of all the suggestions.. i best like the idea of dana 60's. those should be able to take all the power i can throw at them. BUT

is there a good source for them someone can turn me on to? like.. what year what had them?

i already have a ranger 8.8 laying around..

whats a good source for things like spring perches and those sorts of raw materials? that couuld really help me out

Ranger 8.8 isn't any stronger than a Toyota or Dana 44. It's a significant upgrade for the Jeep guys, but a pretty lateral move for us.

D60 or D70 can be found in junkyards, and new from places like Currie, Dynatrac, etc. Note that the pumpkin on these is HUGE - you will need to run big tires to have any ground clearance at all.

k i got ya. yea i figured a junk yard but.. on what vehicle

ive seen 8.8's in the 8's at 170+ miles per hour.. i realize they take modifications to do that.. but ive built a few of em.. one 8.8 on a car that ran 9's at 145ish miles per hour. just a cap girdle, 33 spline axles and the guy wanted an Eaton of all diffs.. that was a good 5 yrs ago.. but still just sayin the 8.8's have potential if you put a little thought into them. oh and i welded the axle tubes.. didnt have a jig or anything just short stitches on opposite sides till it was thru

also as far as tires, i think my max without cutting fenders is roughly 40" based on hearsay talking to local yocal's. havent done any real research in that area yet. for now i have 35's which really dont give me much clearance IMO. my bosses jeep would outwheel me without question... and that blows.

what i REALLY need to do is go to a few events and get some ideas. i have a fair amt of natural ability to engineer.. but still somebody out there has already done it, or found a way that works great. so if i could ge ta few ideas i could build whatever i wanted as far as front suspension.. but id really like to 4 link the rear and do something similar in the front... off topic. just saying. 4x4 is a new game for me. friendly ppl!
