So after some good mud yesterday, no water crossing, i popped the hood to check things out. everything was fine (well my dims dont work but thats a different post) but my airfilter was soaked. I don't have a deck plate nor have i removed the snorkel. 100% stock intake and yet my airfilter was very wet and the bottom was brown with dirty water and even more wet. How is that possible i thought that was a sealed box? any suggestions? is that normal and is it bad?

 

The box isn't sealed, there has to be a hole in it to let air in. Usually the inlet is in the fender, where a lot of water gets sprayed by the tires. It can be bad if the mud and water get into your engine, otherwise just change the filter.

 

it looks like the filter caught it all, would it be better to take that inlet out so the air comes from inside the engine bay? is this what most people do?

 

I don't know if you want to be retrieving WARM air from the engine compartment....

But thats just me...

I remember going off-roaidng the first time and having the exact same thing happen to me...

Since then I Switched the Air Filter but i have nver had the problem since...

And I have done even more extreme off-roading then the first time....

Maybe mine is still clogged with mud....

 

Well if it was a sealed box your truck wouldn't run.

And yes, sucking huge amounts of water into your motor is bad, but if it didn't shut off while going through the water then i'd say your all good.

haha ya i like your avatar yotafun thats sweet, mine wasn't even that bad. it wasn't very deep water but i was going dang fast throught what water there was.

ya lets see that engine bay! mine is pretty messy, its sad it was detailed before i bought it (2 months ago) now its a nice brown shade. do you have the stock snorkle still installed? what about the deckplate mod?

 

i would do the elbow mod and then do the deckplate mod and when you go play in the mud/water close the deckplate and you should be fine .....

 

Ya thats my thinking as well at this point...my question is if you do the elbow mod would you get more or less water in the airbox? i would guess more if your doing a water crossing but less when mudding? just a guess, verify anyone? Thanks again everyone



Has anyone ever fabricated a snorkel that goes inside the engine bay? maybe stupid idea, havn't checked clearences but maybe going the same route as the elbow but inside the engine bay...

 

Going fast thru water is a bad idea.. for that reason right there..... Going slow prevents this from happening, but its not as much fun... then again neither is chaning a motor cuz you hydrolocked it or bent a rod, or threw a rod
