Try YouTube...

And for the millionth time, a "tick" denotes a lighter sound possibly in the top end or a wrist pin.

A knock is harder and more in the bottom end possibly rods or mains.

IME, the exhaust is more like a "pft" than a tick.

And if it's real faint and goes away after it's warmed up (the metal has expanded and sealed the leak) then that's always an exhaust leak to me.

But don't confuse it with a low-to-no oil pressure start-up tick or knock.

Mains can rattle around till the oil pressure comes up...(That's why I turn my carb truck over a while BEFORE I choke it) So might wrist pins but I've never had that experience to know for sure.

this is a fairly loud tick because i could hear it from inside my truck with just the window down i dont think i would call it a knock tho. but when i noticed it (turned down my music for something) my truck had been running for 5-10 min. already

My truck makes the same noise, almost sounds like a little diesel engine...I have a 22r. It's in the top end of the truck and after doing tons of research I've been told it's "valve clatter". My valves are adjusted fine, but still make that noise. I put in 10w30 w/ zinc (racing oil...about $2 more per quart) and the sound definitely decreased. I'm thinking about buying the quart of zinc and adding some of that in - zinc adheres to the metals and acts as a padding for metal on metal contact. It went from loud to pretty mild. Just be glad it's not a knocking in the lower end.

Its a Toyota so my first guess is the valves, almost every single Toyota I see ticks and I know people who adjust and adjust and adjust the valves but they still tick and mine tick too

Mine does the same thing and I have adjusted the valves maybe 10 times with the same results. I even played with different clearances. It's just what old worn out toyotas do. I also tried fancy oil and it did quiet the engine but nothing to write home about.

Listen with the hood up and engine running. When I first bought my 4runner it had tick that turned out to be the doughnut gaskets between the exhaust manifold and downpipe.

You should be able to tell by listening. Mine was bad enough that I could feel the leak by holding my hand near the exhaust.

tick sound

I thought the tick sound was "normal" drivetrain noise from toyotas? I have the 1.5L timing chain motor in a echo that seems to have a ticking noise from the top of the motor at idle... I was told by a Toyota tech that it is normal chain driven valvetrain noise. I think the 22r is a chain driven motor as well? I came to live with it, I got 162k on the 1.5L with no issues thus far.....
