Strange tick
#1
On my 92 4runner (5spd 3vze) I have a pretty loud tick that sounds like it is coming from behind my guages. It matches the motors RPM'sand gets noticeably louder as the engine warms. So far here is what I have tried:
Sent all injectors to witchhunter to be rebuilt / cleaned.
replaced entire gauge cluster (both clusters work fine other than the tick)
warmed engine to operating temp (when tick is loudest) and pulled the guages fuse
replaced waterpump, timing belt, idler pulleys.
Not too sure where else to go with this. I am going to get a stethoscope next and try to pinpoint it but it sounds like it is behind the guages or just on the other side of the firewall. Any help would be great and thanks in advance--Mason

i know on mine there is a rubber grommet in the firewall on the drivers side super close to the headers and i can hear a slight exhaust tick thru it. something to check into. i think the 3vz is just a noisy motor in general.

thanks for the response I will def. check that out. I wish it was something subtle in the background. I want to take it on a road trip but there is no way with it being that annoying.

Depending on what you mean by tick, there is an issue sometimes with the speedometer cable making noise. My '86 did it once, when I drove it at -20 degrees one morning. It was howling though. My friend's T100 does it all the time, most noticeably when he's accelerating. I think it just needs some white lithium grease or something...

thanks for the reply 83 but everything in my gauge cluster is electric and appears to work fine other than the noise. I own 2 4runners that are almost identical other than they are 1 year apart, and they both do it. I am going to try the steering shaft gasket first from there I have no idea where to go next.
