starter rebuild kit
#2
If it is an Aisian starter (OEM), usually the only thing that needs to be fixed on it are the contacts. I usually just clean the thing real good and replace the contacts. I am still on the original starter and 2nd set of contacts. It has gotten me 230,000 miles.

I had to replace the contacts on all three of my 4Runners (1st, 2nd and 3rd gens) at least once. My 3rd gen was plagued with contact issues, so I replaced them about four times total until I bought a whole new starter and that seemed to solve it.
As always, start with the cheapest things first and in my experience, that would be the contacts (and cleaning the entire starter, of course).
Good luck!

My '85 starter appears to be original and is on it's 2nd pr. of contacts as well at ~290K miles.

always a good idea to replace the plunger while your in there replacing the contacts. But in most cases really isn't needed. It all depends on how long you let the issue go and how pitted the plunger got due to arcing. If you can't wait for your order from 4crawler, any starter/altrnator rebuild place in your area should have what you need as well. Shouldn't be much more then $20-30 in parts with the plunger.
Ordering separately cost equaling the cost of a remanned don't sound right either. But haven't researched the dealer costs on the contacts and plunger.

Starters = $100+ for a reliable one. Contacts and plunger (which is what 90% of them that have issues is the problem) $20-30. That's a big difference. And you don't have to deal with un-reliable, crap aftermarket, non-US/non-Japan made remanned units.

thats correct, to rebuild now a days will cost about the same as buying one already rebuilt, if you know how you could do as the other person said, clean everything, get rid of deposits on contacts, though you should perform a continuity check at the proper locations so as to ensurethere are no shorts or open paths for the current flow, also if the starter does not engage flywheel when installed it may pop out when not installed as there is no load on it, the over riding clutch may be bad,if it turns in both direction the over riding clutch is bad
