Please don't hate on me...but I use to be one of "those" guys. Had a 2009 Chevy 2500HD crew cab with the Duramax diesel...and yes, it had a 6" lift, smoke stacks in the bed...but only 20" wheels. One thing that set me aside from the "Prepnecks"...I used my truck as a tow vehicle.

But after owning it for 3 years...I finally got tired of the payments. $744 a month gets old quick.

Never owned a Toyota...always Chevy and Jeeps. I guess the older I get, the less I worry about what the other guy thinks...tired of keeping up with the Jones'. So I sold my 2005 H2 Hummer and truck to find a vehicle that I wanted...and could make into a good "bug out" vehicle.

So I did a ton of research. was looking for a good solid 4x4...Hoping for no payments...something extremely reliable...easy to fix/work on...And go anywhere. Everything kept leading me back to a Toyota. To be honest, I had never even rode in one. After all my searching, I ended up buying a 3rd generation 4Runner. Couldn't be happier. It's roomy, yet not too big...fun to drive...get good fuel mileage...tons of aftermarket support. Only down side...IFS. But hey, that's fixable...and it will be fun doing it.

Hopefully y'all will welcome into the Toyota family. So far, everyone's been great!

Some guys just need a big, pretty, gaudy, expensive, flashy thing to show off, for reasons ranging from wealth to making up for something. Same way some girls need $1000s in makeup, jewelry, clothing and a BMW/Mercedes to show off. I don't do pretty, pretty don't get ya back and forth, pay bills or much else. My $.02.

Anybody can get on the payment plan and get about anything, and if there is a model that someone really likes, I can see that. Not sure on some models like the Pontiac Aztec and the likes of the Chevy Leaf/Volt??? Especially when they come out new on the lots. If it was used and that is all they could afford, that is a different story. Guess I am not into trying to set the trends. I probably wont be disappointed there arent any on the lots by the time I get there.

But to see someone build the truck or car that they want, that I do like seeing. There are not 10 more of them on the road when they are done. It is nice seeing something different from all of the other cookie cutters out there. Besides it is better then keeping the couch warm and what did they do, so dont worry what your neighbors think, so long as you are enjoying yourself.

I too live by the "no payments" mantra... all of my vehicles are paid for and the satisfaction of keeping that money in my pocket is priceless. My house is small, the payment is small, and I typically have scads of extra cash on hand to spend on toys, going out, vacations, etc.. The nicest thing is I can choose to spend it or not... I don't have to worry that the "payment" is made on the first of the month.

I had the huge lifted Powerstroke (no stacks or stickers) and a lifted Expedition that never even saw a day of offroad use, drove like crap in the snow, had tires that cost more than any one of my toyotas, $1200 a month payments, and a $200-300 a week fuel bill to go w/it but they looked cool. I sold it all just before the economy went down the drain and i've never been happier financially.

I've got less than $10k invested in 4 vehicles and 1/4 of that was new tires for 3 of em, all but one runs and that one is next up for a new motor...
