Hey wassup everybody. So recently i bought a 86 4runner 22re with a blown headgasket. So i took it all apart resurfaced the head changed the timing chain and pretty much plugs and wires and cap/rotor. After i got the car running i cant get the car acclerate quickly. When u floor it, it slowly pick ups speed, i changed the fuel filter and cut the muffle(it was no good anyway). So now im stuck i double checked my timing chain. The car idles fine and starts right up. I also have the timing set advanced. What do you guys think?

 

Are you running bigger tires? stocker 22re's are not known for their power abilities so something like bigger tires will affect performance.

 

The 22RE is a slug. Very reliable, but still a slug. Is it a manual or automatic?

 

I have stock tires and manual trans. I have a hard time climbing hills in 3rd not sure if thats how?

 

Slug? Tell that to my stock motor, on 30x9.5s passing my sis in v6 4runner uphill. No v8, but she beats new cars down the on ramp. Make sure your timing is set with jumper in place, etc. Is your clutch slipping? Third should blow up any hill easy. Valve lash set right? No exhaust leaks? Bad enough, and they screw the o2 readings up. Mine got a little weak with an exhaust leak. No codes stored?

My yota is the same way, it's literally faster accelerating in reverse than in first gear. Unless you rebuild the engine I think it will just have to be that way. They do, however, pull pretty hard so think about making it a rock crawler or something like that. (If it's what you're into)

 

Just wondering but did you plug in the throttle body sensor? I unplugged it once and completely forgot to plug it in and my truck would not accelerate for the life of it it would slowly rev up and just have no balls.

 

I had throttle position sensor issues that caused symptoms kind of like this. Mine idled like crap though.

 

How many miles are on this rig?. Did you check the block pitting, corrosion, flatness?
Could be something simple. IMHO I would do a compression test and maybe a leak down just to rule out something more major.

 

did you jump t and e1 at idle,when you did the timing? forgot that myself and had same issue

 

It all comes down to just what kind of performance your comparing it to.

Your dealing with not much over 120 horsepower if that I try not to remind myself of that number.

I drive a 300 Hp work truck all day when I drive the 4 runner home The fact I have only a little bit more then a 1/3 of the HP in a vehicle that weighs just a little bit less.

I need to be in second gear to come up the little hill to my driveway.

 

It's not going to have any low end torque with an open exhaust.

Make sure valve lash is correct.

Do you have any codes? If you just bought it, you should check the afm, tps, and O2 sensor to ensure they are working correctly. All have a direct impact on performance.
