1) turn hubs from free position to lock position, the positions are labeled on the hubs. Full clockwise for lock and full counter clockwise for free.
2) shift 4wd (transfer case) shifter (the shorter of the two shifters.) into 4hi or 4 lo. Positions also listed on the shifter. For 4 low you would move the shifter all the way down then to the right then up to the top. For 4 high all you have to do is move the shifter all the way down.
step 2a) Never move the transfer case shifter to/from 4lo/4hi to 2wd and vise versa when moving.
step 3) enjoy your 4WD.

same with mine gnarly they are only like 1/3 turn, I think the only ones I know of that are 7/8 turn are Warn heavy duty's not sure if they are like that on the toyotas but my bronco had then and were 7/8 of a turn. I also used synthetic on my hubs when I did my brakes.

Does one have to shut off the motor and put on the E-brake before the above steps or can it be done with the tranny in neutral with the motor running? Also what speeds are tops for 4 WD in high/low?.....thanks for the info.

I know on the newer trucks you can go from 2wd to 4hi up to 50 mph. you just have to lock the hubs before hand and never shift to or from 4lo when moving, you must be at a full stop and use the clutch!!

With the front hubs locked in, you can shift between 2H and 4H most any time and at most any speed, as long as the tires are not spinning and you are not accelerating hard. No clutch needed, just ease off the gas and pull the t-case shifter. Between 4H and 4L, you need to be at close to a stop or else double/triple clutch and rev-match the shift.
