Serious break drag

I have a 95 4runner I just bought for my son. It is exhibiting some serious break drag. Cold it will start out OK but about a couple miles into the drive you can feel the engine having to work harder to keep it moving. In one trip it got to the point that it wouldn't even move, just about completely locked up. We left if for a couple hours and when we came back it could move again to get it back home. I already replaced the front calipers and it seems like it's all four wheels that are locking up. It has rear antilock brakes. Can someone help me figure out what's wrong?

Did you physically look at the front brakes to see that the calipers are indeed actuating and locking up?

Had my son run it again until it started to slow down. Jacked it up and found that the back wheels moved freely but the front were locked up. I looked through the manuals at http://www.ncttora.com and noticed that the front brakes are supposed bot have anti squeal shims behind the pads. When I checked the calipers a week ago I remember they had no shims behind the pads. Wondering if without these shims the heat from the pads is transferring into the calipers and are causing the brake fluid to heat up and cause the problem.
