Got a '96 4Runner that I'd hate to lose but I could use the money and have my eye on eventually getting an '04 when the bank account allows. My girlfriend has an '04, which is why she's my girlfriend.

I had a buyer today bail when it was discovered that the torque converter was disintegrating. Not good news to the buyer, and I can't drop the price on it. Pretty sure the tranny's utterly killed. Anybody got advice on what to do with it? I would love to keep it and just fix it up as I go, but it's got to make good financial sense. Can't afford a new tranny on unemployment, currently.

If anyone wants a '96 and can part with $3500 for it, that's what I need to satisfy the bank. It's got a few upgrades but no lift-kit or anything terribly exciting. Would love to eventually get a brush-guard and basket for it if I keep it, so any help there would be good too.

So, I don't know, advice?

 

I would keep it. The 4th gen's are cool but you can't really beat paid for or almost paid for. The tranny problem really sucks but you could get one from a junk yard for 500-700 if you look around. I would say it's time for a 5-speed swap. My vote is keep it but do something to get better cup holders.

 

i agree i would keep it. ive sold ALOT of stuff for a quick dollar and have regretted it ever time

I doubt you could get 3500 for it with a blown tranny. Might as well keep it and fix it eventually or sell it off for a loss.

 

Keep it!! I've thought about selling my truck a few times and almost traded it for a camaro. And x2 what JBurt said, you cant beat already paid for. The torque converter can be replaced. I'm not sure where your located, but some of the yards around me you could get a torque converter for about $20 or a while auto trans for $55 and up...if your quick enough to get them lol.

 

I 2nd what pruney81 said. Keep it and fix it - because its doubtful to get that much out of selling it now.

 

Keep it and fix you've got the spare time. Work a Deal at the scrap yard.

I'm with everybody else - keep it.

If the tranny problems are as serious as you say, you won't be able to get much for it. Hopefully you are being honest with the buyers. I've run across a few sketchy sales where they say everything is fine, Carfax checks out and then about 10 miles down the road they look in their rear-view to see the tranny skipping down the street after them.

Keep it, start searching on here, and hang on for the ride.

junkyard then fix it... you could prolly do it in the drive way just need a transmission adapter for a floor jack and a extra set of hands... i guess it depens how desperate you need the money and how bad you need a vehicle i guess....
