Check it for codes first before you throw money at it. Try this link
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...runner-214946/

Why do you think you distributor is at fault? Have you checked your plugs to see what they look like? Have you checked for a loose plug wire?(more common than a bad distributor). Have you checked you oil for water and radiator for oil. 3.0's are notorious for head gasket issues? Tell us what you have checked and we can help you more.

Have you checked what happens when you pull a plug wire off one spark plug at a time when she's running. That will help eliminate a lack of fire from one or more cylinders. If you pull a wire off and it doesn't make any difference in how it runs. Then you can at least look in a direction. Is the cap arcing on the inside? Did you check it for codes?

Yea if the light is coming on intermittently then that might be your problem. Let's hope at least. Good luck with the codes. Hope it's a cheap fix

I have never seen the Knock Sensor fail, it has always been the wire to it. Suppose it could fail but not in my past experience. On your plug wires, I get Denso off of ebay for the same price as top shelf brands at the part store and the Denso wires are so much better. A good way to check for arching is in a dark shop or dark road with the engine running. You might find all kinds of blue sparks under the hood.

Distributor cap and plugs are competitvely priced at the dealer. Much better quality. (Dealer is good source for your oil filter as well) When I see intermittent Check Engine Lights and no codes usually is a vacuum leak. I would suggest checking or replacing your vacuum lines. Go to the parts store and get several feet of vacuum line and replace on section at a time.
