no compression in cylinders need help

i got my 86 pickup back from the mechanic today and was told i have no compression in cylinders 1 and 2, and 120psi in 3 and 4. there is also alot of noise coming from the valves. the mechanic told me i need a new motor. can someone explain to me what could cause this, could there be another solution or do i need a absolutely new motor? i dont want to lose the truck because of one mechanic but i also dont want to pay another for the same answer.

More than likely you need a new motor...

You actually don't but it'll save you and him time and money... if everything is fixed all at once.

If you've got no comp on 1 and 2 you could have top end problems as well as bottom end...

Me, I'd just get me a clunker that ran and freshen it up and put that motor in while I rebuilt that motor and if the clunker died, I'd just transplant the engine I just rebuilt in...

Or forget all that and just rebuild it...

But yeah... Sounds like you need a "new" engine so you aren't chasing problems after you fix one thing in that engine...

Yes, it could be the head gasket to, but I get the feeling you're not a DIYer...

The head will have to be pulled, and one should know when they come to the point of getting the head off, if you have any cam or valve damage...

And we're right back at what I said about saving money, and chasing problems...

I'd take it home and find a shade tree and FSM b/f I'd pay a mechanic to find out what's wrong...
