Newbie here

Hey guys,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I purchased a 1999 Toyota Prerunner this weekend. I bought it for $1,200. It has power windows/locks, cold ac, 32x11.50R15 tires, and a lift. The truck has 176,000 miles, it is a 3.4L V6. Previous owner thought it had a slipping transmission as the RPMs wouldn't go over 2,000RPM. I bought it and immediately changed air and fuel filters (both which were NASTY!) I changed out the TPS sensor and still the truck wouldn't go over 2,000 rpm and the truck had no response if you gave it more than 1/4 throttle. I tried cleaning the MAF which made the problem even worse, so I went out and replaced the MAF with a new one, and guess what, IT WORKED! I now have a good little beater truck that has a good transmission and everything, all for $1,200!

On a new note, today the truck would not start, I tried turning it on, it made on click and then acted like the battery was dead, I took the battery to Autozone and they told me it had 100% charge on it. I went back and hooked it up and it did the same thing, clicked once and all lights turned off, acting like a dead battery? I unplugged it and hooked the cables back up, and it worked fine? Any ideas what it could be?

Welcome to Yota Tech

Sounds like you have some dirty battery terminals clean them up good look if corrosion is under the cable insulation.

Never hurts to go with new bigger battery cables.

X2, and nice buy! I had a similar problem with my 4runner, and it was a wire that had seperated *almost* all the way from the connector at the battery, and i couldn't see it till i started wiggling wires. Check for clean, tight connections at the batt, starter & alt, then if still no good, I'd move on to fuses and relays personally.

Basic troubleshooting- works for Toyotas too

....sometimes.
