Newb Tool Question!!!!

Hi, I feel like a big newwwwwb asking this but I am rebuilding some AISIN hubs and I cant get off this little ring. I have tried snap ring pliers, flat head screwdrivers, etc.

Is there any tricks?

So far as I'm aware you never pull that particular part... apart... while doing the rebuild (in any article I've ever seen anyway). That kind of ring needs to be expanded to release you would use a variation of snap ring plier for it... sorry I know what it is but I don't know the proper name.

I've taken that off twice. Grip it between 2 pieces of wood in a vice. Use 2 flat tip screw drivers with electrician's tape wrapped around the tips and then carefully push it out with each tip on the ends of the snap ring.

Thanks for the replies. I am taking it off because these were nasty dirty and I needed to clean them good. I can feel dirt grind in there when I turn it by hand. I will let you know if I get it off. Thanks again.

BTW...Those rings are a pain in the arse

I ground a small groove in each end of my pair of snap ring pliers to remove rings like that:

I have a set with my transmission tools. I believe they are referred to as external snap ring pliers. They have knurled outer griping surfaces to grab the pointed ends of the snap rings.

Marlin sells a tool that works great for those type of rings:

Can be found in their axle section, bottom of page. $24.95... and temporarily out of stock as of this post, but I am sure there are other sources as well.

I got a set of these a while back and they work amazingly well.
