New truck, few questions
First post to go with me first Yota!
First, as much as I know about the truck. It's a 89 DLX long bed 4x4 with the 22RE 155K on the clock, that is mostly stock, except for Warn hubs, one of which is broke, and will need to be replaced, and a rusty exhaust that is not stock.
The exhaust needs to be replaced, as it leaks from every where except the manfold it's self. I have read up on it on here, and I'm going to do the complete exhaust from Downey.
It runs rough, and is in bad need of a tune up, and haveing the valves set.
1st question, I ran into a thread on here that said that the valves should be set when warm, this goes against every thing I have done with valves on any thing, water or air cooled. Can some one explain to me why they should be set warm, and what specs I should set them to?? What should I look for on the timeing chain as far as wear??
2nd question, I have a strange vibe while driving at around 30-40 MPH, it doesn't matter what gear I'm in, but if I let out of the throttle, it goes away with out dropping below the speeds stated above, and it will come right back as soon as you get back into the throttle. The PO told me that he had the wheel balanced not long ago, and the weights on the tires are new looking.
3rd question, Is there any more to the tune up on theses that the normal plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and filters/PVC? I all ready know all about Seafoam, and it will get some along the way.

Yes, set the valves hot or use approx. 0.001" less clearance for cold:

Why hot vs. cold? Probably because that is the way Toyota specifies the clearances. As the engine heats up, the various types of metal in the head and valve train expand at different rates and I guess they wanted to specify the clearances at actual operating temperatures.

The valves are set hot. Set them to a snug .007in intakes and.011 ex, despite the under hood tag. Other important thing for tune up are cleaning the throttle body and making sure the TPS is set properly. There are several threads here on this subject.as far as the vibe, check your u-joints and your pinion bearing for slop. While you have the valve cover off check the timing chain guides. They should be all there and no broken bolt holes.
