I'd listen to cougar. 81-84 block is 2mm taller on deck height. Different heads and different pistons on 81-84 block as well as different T chain length. Better put the right parts on the right block. If you don't know what you got how do you know what to put with it?

If they are not the exact same, why would you try and install them?

Do you have a picture of the exhaust side of the engines?

This is the exhaust side of the new block. This block also has a spot for the knock sensor, the "laser" mark, and is the same height as my original block, these are all things that the old pre 1985 blocks are not supposed to have. I have come to the conclusion that I wasn't using those bolt holes anyway like RMA's truck and that is the only difference so it should be fine.

Trust me, I don't like to waste my time, but I know it is not an "old" <1984 block.

Thanks for the help guys

Just a follow up incase anyone else runs into this:

The truck runs like new! No fitment issues with the timing chain or the missing bolt holes using the "new" block. It turns out this block is from a '95 or '94 22re and they just got rid of those obviously useless bolt holes by the oil filter.

Thanks all for the info, it helped me make my own correct decision.
