87 4runner hic-up while driving sometimes?

I have an 87 4runner 22re with about 150,000 miles on it, I have only had it for a few months but I leave the state all the time so I don't get to drive it as much as I would like too. when I do drive it, every once and a while it will sorta hic-up while driving at the end of a gear (not when its out of gear). like maybe its not getting gas, kinda like a tic, like puht... puht.puht... puht. but it only does it sometimes.

Before I had my 4runner I had an 89 PU 22re that would do the same exact thing and I am wondering if this is a common problem and if so what is it that is causing this to happen so I can fix it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i would have to say if it is only doing it when its in gear its not a fuel problem because it would most likely do it if you step on the gas when your not in gear.does it do it in every gear or just one

when my 23 year old 22re T.P.S. went out, it would jerk and buck only while driving at about 2800 rpm's with light to moderate load, any gear. wouldn't do it while parked and reving.
