Need Tranny

First off, I am completely lost and I've tried searching and searching...

When I purchased my 1987 4x4 22r (carburated) toyota, I bought it thinking there will be a TON of replacement parts (find everything/everywhere)... boy was I wrong, or maybe I don't really know how and where to look.

I m currently in need of a new transmission, so being carb it's a G58 I am looking for and not a W series correct? (btw if anyone has a matching one I need, let me know) saw G52 and G54 what are they, which do I have.

So some questions I have, what is a compatible Transmission for my truck.
Compatibility = meaning bolt on, take old one out and put replacement in, are they from same years, or I ve read some 4Runner have the same exact one.

What other tranny will mount onto 22r?

Hopefully you guys can help. This is my first truck also.

well if you want to switch to different trannys i think they all bolt up pretty much but ur gonna have to get the transfercase out of the same truck, dunno if its a g58 tho, i think if you look under the FAQ's it has some good pointers there, or search for pics and compare

Welcome toYotatech.

Look on the driver door vin plate. Tranny will be stamped there. Try the classifieds.

G series is a forward shift and W series is a top shift. You can mix and match them with any 22R/RE, problem is the W series won't match your tcase.

You're fairly free to choose any transmission from any 22R series engine and be able to install it without many issues... as long as you're not trying a 2wd trans in a 4wd truck or changing an auto for a manual or vice versa. There is some concern with later models and electronic speedos vs. cable driven as well but that can be dealt with.

But on the door jamb, there should be a code showing what your transmission is- like Wabbit said.
