Question How slow IS the 3. slow???

Okay,
seriously, I have a Gen 1(1988) SR5 V6 that I picked up and have just started working on.
Thanks to the fine folks here, I've managed to identify anf fix a few minor things: Valve cover leakage, than dam%d "J" pipe thing next to the BVV, etc.

But here's a question:
This thing is SLOOOW. I mean under normal circumstances, running stock tires, it struggles to get to 60 by the end of the average freeway on ramp. If you want 70, plan way ahead. Watching the RPM's , I think it's not downshifting under acceleration like it should, but my mechanic seems to think it's fine, and that's just B/C it's a 3 speed.
My mechanic is a buddy of mine who runs a shop, and I would trust him with my kids or my life without question. Trusting his judgment on my 'yota, though...

This thing cant be THAT slow, can it?!? There are alot of comments on how slow it is, engine swaps, etc...but I can't find any info on what the "norm" is for this motor/ tranny setup.

Thanks!

btw....i got a hernia carrying my 135 pound toolbox in my driveway, which replacing the J pipe.... $1.35 in hose, 15 grand in surgery!

Do a leak down test for compression, or ask your buddy. Your solenoids in the tranny my be toast, replacing the three of them will help shifting.
Everyone complains about the auto, mine needs solenoids, I am swapping in a 5spd manual.

Dang man, kinda a reminder that automechanics is a physical job with the rest of em. STRETCH! Do it when you wake up, in front of the tv, whenever you can. Not to call ya out but 135! Oh and something must be up bc I think my 2.4 can take ya. Good luck w the surgery though. They always blow.

Thanks for the replies for far!
I'll have my buddy check the compression, and the selenoids in the tranny-

... and for the record, I was carrying the toolbox and twisted to get around another car..which blew out a slightly previously torn muscle. No doubt the original injury stems from juggling chainsaws, saddle breaking brown bears, or one of my other truly manly pursuits! lol

There ya go, prob shark skiing or wolverine tag. No worries, I consider myself in pretty peak physical condition, playing rugby for the Quantico Hooligans demands it. That's why I find it silly I can still tweak my neck or back just working on ol girl, the truck you pervs.

Should definitely not be that slow. Make sure its in tune (ignition timing). My 22re was pretty slow...then I replaced the cat converter... now its fast... Have you mechanic check the transmission for sure.
