Hot Start

ok guy's i have a 89 4x4 22re, new engine, it has a starting problem when it is hot. in the mornings at cool morning temps it starts great. Drive it an hour to work turn it off wait 5 minutes starts fine. wait an hour it has to roll over alot and then starts but runs fine. For the rest of the day it does this, after it starts it's fine, cut it off it start's right up until after a while and you have to grind on it. As per the factory repair manual i replaced the green temp sensor and the cold start injector timeout switch, no change. Oyea, if you roll start it, it will fire right up. Any ideas?

Gotcha, . I hear ya, ...and that's good advice on cleaning up those connections. Might try a dab of dielectric grease on most of them after you clean them up.

However, reading your post again.... I just noticed, "Oyea, if you roll start it, it will fire right up. Any ideas?".... Did you add that later? DANG, if not, I'm slipping! lol. (Maybe 4crawler, reading that portion, felt it's still likely a 'fuel delivery during hot soak' situation.)>>

If the AFM, C.O.R., etc., check out, .... then we can go from there.

Happy Gremlin Hunting, wish you quick success! lol.

watching this thread toytoter, I have the same exact to a tee problem as you in my 87 runner. However I have not got ahold of a mulitimeter yet to test my Cold start time switch or the temp switch from the TSB. Check out my thread there is some good info from Bob, but it looks like you have ruled both of these items out:

If I find any solution, I will let you know as well. For some reason I keep thinking its my fuel pump since you have to almost prime the fuel system to get it to start hot, Does yours do this?

Try the fuel pump test jumper, takes a minute, costs nothing and if it helps, that points you to the cause of the problem.

Ok, got through with the cleaning of the connecters and used dielectric grease on them and tried the fuel pump jumper twice and there is no change. Gonna check the AFM and the C.O.R. next. THANKS GUY'S!

curious as to your outcome...Let us know what you find!

BTW the COR should be audible when turning the truck over, You will hear a click type sound. I am pretty sure this indicates that it is functioning, but at what level is beyond me...maybe someone else can explain better?

Sorry it's been so long but i've been real busy at work, this is what i've found out so far, the cold start injector sprays while the switch is in the start position and does so until you return to the on position. during these times when it is hard to start it calls for the cold start injector to spray. the fuel pump runs fine also. i'm going to try unplugging the cold start injector when it is hot to see if the thing is flooding. i'lkl get back.
