i just bought a 1993 toyota pick up 4x4 with a 22re, after its warmed up and at running temperature it idles around 1100 rpm. is this normal? the truck has after market headers and exhaust, is it possible that the headers messed up a 02 (oxygen) sensor? how can i fix this my self.

 

throttle sticking? throttle cable too tight? Vacuum leaks? Check engine light? Those would the first few things I would check.

 

no, thats not it, the throttle is not sticky, the cable is fine, no engine light, and no vac leaks...

 

adjust it down with the screw?

 

^^ as long as he is certain it's not any of those I mentioned it would be safe to do that as they do tend to "wiggle" out a bit.

One more vacuum leak check people very often forget and spraying carb cleaner on possible leak areas wont tell you is pull the PCV out and plug it, does the idle come back down? If so then you got an air leak in the valve cover, oil pan or timing cover gaskets. Another common one is the steel vaccuum rails that the rubber hoses go on can spring a leak too.

 

if he screws it in and it doesnt work then he will know that something you metnioned is wrong, if it does work, happy day!

 

i tried, but nothing happened, but im not exactly sure if what i was turning was the idle screw, (i thought it was). where is it located/what does it look like? and whats the normal idle speed?

 

oh wait that's right I keep forgetting the idle screw on the 22re's is actually an air bleed screw and not a mechanical idle speed screw like on a carb. It's more like an idle mix screw on a carb.

No wait, if there is a vac leak and you turn that screw letting less air in to lower the idle unless it's a big leak it will change regardless if there is a vac leak cus all your doing is making a smaller leak by letting less air into the TB. Which still masks the problem and unmeter air is still going into the engine.

On a carb you can get away with it (idle mix screw) more then on a EFI truck as there is no metering of the air going in.

 

a sticking IACV can cause high idles too if it's stuck open. Doesn't always have to cause erratic idles. At least I know it caused a flat high idle on my BMW anyway. Might be something to look into and testing/cleaning out.

I wanna say it's 800-850. I have my carb'd truck set at 950 with no load. ie lights/heater etc on.

Problem with the efi trucks if the idle is too high it triggers a fuel cut when brakes are applied.

 

well the truck runs smooth, i have drivin it about 3,000 miles yet and i cant notice anything wrong, just at red lights i notice its at 1100 rpm. and what are the possible problems that could happen if i dont fix this?

 

i had this problem. check the pcv valve and air filter.

 

i figured out my timing was off, so i put it to 5 degrees btdc and the thing runs like a champ, it idles around 900 rpm now

but my throttle is a litte sticky, whats the best way to fix that?

 

Glad u got it fixed. I have a high idle round 2000 rpm on a 22 re. Replaced throttle position sensor and helped for 5000 miles but now it's doing it again. I cleaned the throttle body when I had all of it apart at the same time. Any ideas on this?

 

I have a 89 Toyota 22re 4x4 it start fine and runs time but once it warms up it idles at 1100 rpms. The timing is right no facile leaks. Any advice?
