Head Gasket Replacement - Help!

Head Gasket Replacement - Help!
So this is my 82' toy. I bought the thing wrecked for $200. I have another 82' toy that is identical to this one, so all I had to do was replace the front quarter panel, the hood, the radiator, and straighten everything out. Since I've had it I thought that the radiator had a small leak because I was having to fill it up about every 2 to 3 days. I thought that when I was transplanting it, I may have poked a hole in it somewhere. Well the other day I go to check the oil and it is this milky white kind of color. So I went to drain the oil and about a gallon of water came out before the oil did. So my assumption is that it is a blown head gasket. Now I have worked on small engines, but definately not anything of this size. This is the progress I have so far. So I know I need to remove the intake and exhaust manifolds, but where do I go from here?? Does anyone know of any threads around here that might pertain to this, or any links on the web? I'm new so I havent had the chance to look around yet. Thanks!

Get a repair manual for it. It will explain everything. when u get the parts get the whole head gasket kit timing chain and do the water pump while you r in there. make sure you get all the water out of there. after you get it all back together and running i would run it for maybe like 100 miles then change the oil again. good luck. these engines are pretty easy to work on thank fully.

Check your spark plugs. Is one or more nice and CLEAN? If so, you probably have a headgasket breeched....
However, its also quite possible you have a timing chain guide broken, and the chain wearing into the water jacket at the edge of the water pump. Pull off the water pump and look for two "tracks" in the inner left edge of the chamber. If so, and there is a hole there, you have the latter problem instead.
however, if you're energetic, you can just do the whole enchilada, take the head to the machine shop for a valve job, and replace the timing set all at once.
There are about an infinity of write-ups on this system and two-dozen other boards on the internet chock full of pix and advice for doing this procedure. Just google 22re timing chain and you're off and running.

Actually, it is most likely a hole in your timing chain cover. '84 and up 22r and RE motors had plastic timing chain guides. What would happen is that the chains would stretch, flap around, beat the hell out of the timing chain guides, break them into pieces (you probably will find chunks of plastic in your oil pan), and then the chain would wear a hole in the timing chain cover just behind the water pump, causing a water/oil mix.
Here is a thread with pics of just such an occurance:

You can replace the TC cover without removing the head, here is a resource:

Good luck!
