i pulled my gauge cluster out to place over lays on the gauges and replace the bulbs with led's when i plugged it back in i have no lights. my turn signal also no longer work. and the heater and shifter lights no longer works. i pulled the bulbs out and turned them around still don,t work put the old bulbs back and now they don't work all fuses are good anyone have any idea's

 

Were did you get your leds. Most leds require a resistor to function in a series circuit.
Could just be the bulbs.

 

I bought them from white gauges.com. should't the oem bulbs work when i put them back in? i took my test light and i have power to the socket but neither bulb type works now

 

Are you sure that the filament inside the original bulb didn't break when you pulled it? Their old and brittle and with enough force (doesn't take much) they won't work anymore.

 

And the old bulbs don't work when u put them back in?

 

You know i didn't think of that but i would think that not all 7 of the bulbs would not be bad but makes sense because i have power to all 7 locations but neither the old bulbs or the new led's work. strange just can't figure it out. someone out there must have the answer

 

Have you tried a new bulb? They sell them at walmart..bulb #168.

Are you using a resistor with the LEDs?

well tried new bulbs today still didn't work. check ed once again and i have power from the harness to the bulb socket. could this be a grounding issue ?

 

You using a test light, or a voltmeter?

Either way you should be able to test the ground and the pos.

If you have power and a ground in the socket, then its got to be the bulbs or the connections them selves. But if your just testing the positive in the socket and grounding to something else in the truck for your test light, then it could be the ground.

Im pretty sure that when it comes to the dash lights the ground is cut when the switch is off, not the positive. Correct me if I'm wrong, but thats what I found in my 89 dash light circuit. Id be checkin that ground, and looking at the dimmer switch next for power if the ground is bad. You may have shorted something along the line.

 

you know what i was grounding my test light on the steering column. so where should i pick up the ground for the test light

Ya from the sounds of it, definitely missin the ground.
You had to unplug the dimmer switch when you took the dash apart right?
Check the connector, maybe just a quick wiggle to be sure. Or the connection at the instrument cluster. And the hazards switch also.

 

Well i have been struggling with the gauge cluster not having power at the socket still don't have that figured out yet. but the turn signals stopped working as well and now the head lights are out. so i took my test light and check the fuse inside the cab for turn signals and i have no power there. so checked the fuse and it is good. i also have no power in the fuse box to the defrost. looked around for loose connections wiggled wires still nothing. then i moved to the fuse block under the hood for the head lights the 2 fuses for the head light do not have power and the fuses are good so i unplugged the headlight relay and tested that socket and i have power there but nowhere else in that circuit. so my questions is as follows.

1. is this a relay problem?
2. if so where is the relay for the turn signals
3. if not what the heck is going on?

the thing that sucks is if i don't figure it out soon i am going have to swallow my pride and go to a shop and i really don't want to have to do that so please help

Wouldn't think its a relay with it being multiple things, headlights have there own relay.
Im starting to wonder if you have a ground issue in the dash. Only saying that because you were in there mess'n around before all hell broke loose. Did the headlights just now stop working?

Not much other then blown fuses can happen from accidental shorts, most of the time. From the sounds of it something didn't get plugged back in. Id say plugged into the wrong spot, but thats not possible with a yota, all the plugs are specific to each other and would not go in the wrong spot.

And for the weirdest theory: a ground issue from the battery to the body of the truck. That could cause all sorts of wackiness. Not the ground cable to the starter, but the small one that grounds to the body. Could be loose, maybe,

I do know lots about electrical, but this one is hard to trouble shoot without being there. Don't give up on it, I will give it some more thought and post back with ideas, and feel free to pm me more if you have any questions.
