Engine Upgrade

Ok, so here's the deal. I really like my Taco but the power of a 2.4l engine is a little too underpowered. It's got 4wheel drive but I was looking at the cost of an engine swap to something larger.

Does anyone have any ideas or prices round-a-bouts? I figure if it's too expensive with overall changes and mods, then I just won't do it.

I know a guy who put a 4cyl turbo diesel into his taco but had to change out the gears, tranny, transfer case and some other stuff but it's got a hella amount of power for normal driving and muddin'. But he said he got into it for like $8K.

Anything? Any ideas?

unless somebody swapped a 2WD taco engine in your truck you have a 2.7L (3RZ), not a 2.4 (2RZ-FE)

at least this is what i understand...

there is alway LCE headers etc.

Ok, I may have it wrong, it may be the 2.7L. Still want a bigger engine though.

is there a superchager for the 2.7--if so--that would probably be your best bang for the buck

Turbo 3RZ is probably the best gas engine for a Tacoma. Rock solid engine. They can make 1300HP in drag trim, and ~300HP on pump gas.

DONT switch motors - just add boost. Turbo, Turbo, Turbo!!! go over to customtacos.com and you'll see that u can add about 6lbs of boost without changing anything, and up to 15lbs boost with injectors and a simple tune on that motor. You'll be screaming past everyone!!!

DAMN--i was looking at those kits and that is what i would do--motor swap alone will run you 4k easily.

If i had it all over to do again i would of slapped on a SC and been done.

Good luck

Buy a Chebby... Seriously. B/c you aren't doing ANYTHING to that motor but making it use more gas, and making it last half as long.

Buy a V8 Chevy and be done with it... I'd hate to read a post post by you complaining about the lack of MPG, why your rings are shot and you still don't have enough POWA!!! After you've spent 3 or 4k in Turboing it...

Right... So bolt $3,000 to a 300k engine, that will only last 150k with a Turbo and lead foot pushing it...

You know if you Turbo it, you'll HAVE to run high test gas, right?

So that's; Last half as long, get less MPG, and have to pay more for the fuel...

if power is his main concern, those 3 are not.. and you can have a turbo motor that gets the same MPG as stock.. as for longevity, yea with 300k good luck. and every one knows paying for primo doesn't make that much of a difference in everyday life..

im kinda with tried4x2signN, go for the proven performer... I did a 5.7 swap in a s10 blazer for about $1100, but it had the tranny already..

i never thought the day would come, when i seen tried4x2signN say drop a chevy motor in a toyota LOL

i am NOT against cross breeding (i want a 4.3 in my 4runner ) but i still think the turbo would be best for him.

and at 6lbs of boost, he shouldn't have to run high octane gas...now 15lbs of boost..yes.

and at 6lbs of boost, you'd prolly gain sayyyy...almost 50hp???

and if he does a chevy swap, then he has 8 mouths to feed with fuel, instead of only 4...

NO WAY he will get better mileage with a chevy V8 than a slightly modded 3rz

HAAAAAA i will drink to that.

I would hate to say it--really hate to say it---i mean it is killing me....i mean i am about to puke...

But the new Gen III, IV, and etc get great gas mileage. and they are well built. My built 3.4, 35's w/4.88's get 10 mpg in the city and 13.3 on the highway.

My buddies suburban with a 40 gallon tank did ~600+ miles--just with those numbers thats 15 mpg--but i think it was more like 700 miles to a tank.

Drive was from Runninbg Springs Cali--to Laughlin--out to lake Mojave pulling a boat--back to hotel and all the way back to running springs--we did put $10 in the tank at the bottom of the hill at Cali gas prices ($3.49)

Anyways

and I wouldnt of suggested the turbo kit if i knew he had 300k on the motor.....

I would find a crashed truck and a cheap 3rz and have a good motor builder freshen the cylinders, do a great ring job and lower compression. Many times they dont even have to touch the lower end........
