I had similar problems after a couple of days in the desert. When I would turn it on it would start but then the RPMs would dive and she'd die. I'd let it sit for a few seconds and then fire it up again. Most times it would start fine and stay running but the RPMs were high, around 1200. Regular idle for me is around 700-750. I cleaned the MAF sensor, which was easy and almost free, but it still died. Next step was to clean the idle air control valve. I'm new to the 4runner so I searched and read up on it. Ultimate Yota has a few articles on it but most of the pictures were from yotatech. Before I started I went to the dealer to buy the metal gasket and rubber figure 8 oring so that I wouldn't have to tear into it if it was leaking. The throttle body had a lot of carbon build up and the IAC valve was gummed up. I soaked it and gave it a good scrub. Make sure you lube it up a little before you put it back on. A little advice, when you're at the dealer get a few extra IAC valve screws. I gummed mine up taking them out. I got them back in but it'll be a pain to take the valve off next time. Before starting I pulled the EFI fuse because the idle had been messed up during the trip home (600 miles). Put everything back together and she fired up great. I think everything was already dirty but the desert made it worse. Take your time taking things apart and label hoses if you need to. I used tape and numbered the hoses to make sure I reinstalled everything and in the right place, as it was my first time.

Ok, thanks, I have noticed that some of my vacuum lines are in the wrong place, not sure what the problem was, but my 4runner is fine now, very smoothe idle......I think I have a problem with my TPS, if i touch the wires that go to it, the engine runs rough, that is my concern now,,,,,thanks

How did your vaccum lines get mixed up? You might want to trace the TPS wires and make sure they aren't cut or fraying. I haven't replaced one on a Toyota so I'm not sure if they have the pigtail on them. Mybe unplug it, clean it out and put some de-ox on the connections.
