Easy Answers

So i went out and bought myself an 89 toyota pickup. 4cyl 5speed 4x4. motor is rebuilt and tranny still has factory gears. This guy put some 35" super swamper boggers on it and the truck wont go over 50mph. Truck has a 3" body lift and a suspension lift. So i would like to keep a larger looking tire, but still be able to make it above 50mph without runnin the piss out of the truck. What ideas do you guys have? Also how fat of a wallet do you need to upsize the engine or re gear the transmission? just some basic questions hopeing someone has done somthing along these lines. thanks

Welcome to YT.

Your pickup is probably going over 50, but your speedo doesn't match with the tire size. BTW, you don't regear the tranny, you regear the differentials in the axles.

Alot of folks here will run either 4.88's or 5.29's with 35" tires and a 22re. personal preference determines which one you want. (freeway vs. in town vs. trail, etc.)

Read up, everything is in there......

BTW, you can find a set of 4.88's on craigslist for under $500. Just gotta know what to look for.

I regeared my rig for $220.

Even if you gear down it will still be a dog. I just put about $800 into a motor swap and i couldn't be happier.

I bought a 7mge from a Supra. Check out this website to learn a little bit more about it

http://www.supracharged.com

I have 36" swampers and stock gearing and it will spin both rears until i'm moving at about 50mph... okay thats on a wet road but still pretty impressive for 36's and stock gearing

Not all of us are as smart as you for a full 7m swap.

Now you got him all confused.

Gears? motor? gears? motor?

Your rig might have come from the factory with 28's, if so 31's will still have your speedometer off, just not as much. But its much more drivable then stock gears and 35's

im runnin 35s on stock 4.10s on my DD. got about 1300mi on a rebuild and it pulls the 35s great. my speedo reads 50 when im goin about 65-68ish. 4th gear at 70mph is perfect. 2nd gen 4runners that came stock with auto, 31's and v6? came with 4.88 gears. check teh door jam for gear code G292. most junkyards from my experince waht about 300-400 fro the diffs

So you think that jumpin to a 31 would give me back some daily driver power? Im lookin to make it a truck to drive to work, and somthin to drive back and forth on gravel to keep my newer silverado in better shape.

Oh a motor swap may not be in your best intrest then you could easily end up with a pile of junk that wont run.

He asked about money for a bigger motor so i added that in. It was actually pretty easy though the wiring wasnt as bad as i expected.

Theres no confusion between gears and motor... how about both i still want to gear down

of course dropping to a smaller tire will give you back some power. But then you are stuck taking off your lift and body lift.

Read through the link I posted, has everything you need to compare stock vs. whatever setup you are thinking of running.

Yoder G292 is for 4.10's in a 4banger.

G144 is for 4.88's (also in the link I posted)

And if you are just driving it as a commuter and on gravel roads, smaller tires will do you just fine.

Good call, Alex. If I win the lotto I will do both for sure.

Its funny, you went motor bc you know you got a good deal with yours. I went gears since he said rebuilt motor and I know gears can be a good deal as well.

Does that mean I have a motor swap looming over me?

Check BigBluePile's profile.

He has 35's, 5 spd, 22re, with 4.88's. A fine example of what can be done to keep them swampers rolling.

I have a 91 22re with stock gears and everything that I run 35s on. I know when im doing what says 50 im acutally going 65 ish... The spedo is wayy off.... Although my truck also will go up to 65 if i push it and that means im going way faster then needed...
I would suggest 488s... Thats what i plan on doing later on to get some more power back..

alright, back on again. drove the truck back home the shop. got her to roll into 3rd and speedo said 45 so im was guessin it was around 55. truck bogs out in 4th, and the idle is off, truck want to die if i dont keep giving it some gas. How do you adjust the idle, and what are your thoughts on it not wanting to move in 4th?

you adjust the idle with the littel screw next to where (not sure what its called) teh thing where you can turn to rev the motor up with. the screw is pretty sensitive though so dont turn i tmuch. it doesnt make sence that your boggin down in 4th gear? sounds like you may have another problem besides teh 35s

Alright I did some work on the truck last night and found the distributer(plug wires run from this to motor) was loose. So I re timed it by ear, and it makes a world of diff.

Just re-gear it and you'll be happy. If you get lucky you can find a front and rear 3rd member w/ 4.88's or 5.29's for less than $500. I'm sure you can find some friends to help you install if you are not mechanically inclined, its not too hard of a job. Good luck..

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
These engines were made to be used in trucks for survival...

So Toyota wasnt interested in 0-60, or how fast it would go. They were only interested in HOW LONG it would go...

Can't mix the two, sorry. You have to make a decision as to which you want more; More power, less reliability/ durability and MPG... Or More reliable/ dependable and more MPG...

And with 35's you're running an effective gear of... do this AGAIN... 3:40. B/c you basically take .10th of a gear for every 1" in diameter you go up...

And I'm sorry... 3:40's with ANY motor and it will still be a dog... as to why someone would recommend that...

B/c next you'll be buying a transmission... 35's + 200hp = pop!
