86-95 IFS 4x4 GEAR INFO - READ FIRST HERE NEWBS BEFORE POSTING

Seems like this subject comes up here a lot. Here are some links to ..

1. Identify your gears, and what will swap into it.
2. Use the Gear calculator to input new tire sizes and possible gear ratios, and compare them to stock.
3. Links to threads on how to swap them, and some locker info as well.

1.
To find out gear ratios and codes.........
http://www.off-road.com/trucks4x4/ar....jsp?id=274535
https://www.yotatech.com/51260014-post25.html

pics on where to look on your vehicle to find out what gears you have....

To see what differentials are a straight swap......

2.
A tire size calculator for those that can't read tire sizes....
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

A link to help you figure out what transmission you have, in order to input the info in the gear calculator... (Thanks MudHippy)

or enter your VIN here.. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html

The gear calculator to compare stock vs. new gears and bigger tires....

3.
And how to swap out the front IFS diff, with pics!!

Matt16's writeup of a rear third removal, just ignore the locker install (unless you are installing a locker, of course ) For second Gen 4Runner
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...nstall-161405/
Since I added a thread of 4cyl diff locker installs, here is Justinlhc's V6 diff locker install, lots of pics!!
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...p-pics-179241/
And Philbert's rear third removal, on an 87 4Runner. Different pics of parking cable, for those visual learners. (Thanks to Philbert!)
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...e-pics-205316/

And since I addressed lunchbox lockers above,
If you want to fit an e-locker in the stock 86-95 housing....
http://home.off-road.com/~kemanuel/elocker/elocker.html
http://www.sonoransteel.com/phong/re...r.html#housing

This link has everything you need to swap the TRD in. Studs, gaskets and wiring harness.
http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/index.php?cPath=25_62
Cool switch panel options
http://12voltguy.com/web/index.php?o...hk=1&Itemid=43 (Thanks tried4x2signN)

Bonus Material!
And dealing with ADD (auto disconnecting differential) in a vehicle without the system.
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/d...system-190329/

Or you run a vacuum line to the passenger side inlet, and cap the drivers side inlet. Easy as...... a cap and a vacuum line.

And I can't believe I forgot to add this one. A cool site with tons of pics. I have lost myself for hours in here...
http://www.gearinstalls.com/

Hope this helps. And please, if there are other threads/links that will help out, please post it up.

Nice links. I never can find anything on that off-road site anymore. They had the best torsion bar adjustment writeup over there, but I can't find it anymore.

Some advise here.. What I've been doing is saving the web page as a PDF file then storing it locally on my machine.
If you use firefox there is an add in that does it for you. All you have to do is click a button and wait a minute for the conversion to take place. Here is a link to the add-on

What would help if you veterans would start sending newbs to this thread or report redundant posts on other topics that you see. No way to find them all every day.

But seriously, and I see what you mods go through. someone was asking this morning about 3vze head work and I thought i would tell him to search and then felt generous and posted up a bunch of links and the the thread was gone. (that right there is a run-on sentence).

so i ran the spectrum of emotions.

But i like what KIYO did as well as the other sticky's have great value too.

but honestly, a year ago, i did not know HOW to navigate this site and had neer been part of a forum before.......but now.....I get all sweaty when i don't check it every 10 minutes

I understand. It's a "Don't Feed the Bears" kind of thing. If you never make them search from the get go, they won't ever search, that is the problem now. Too many free loaders who feel "entitled" to information inside of doing a bit of work for it.

I have no problem sharing information and answer dozens of emails a day and posts on a variety of forums, but when someone asks something they could find with 30 seconds of effort it just pisses me off.

This is one of the only links I know of to get the transmission gear ratio #'s for all Toyotas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categor..._transmissions

Seems to me as though it ought to be included in this thread, somewhere...

And really, how many more times do you guys want to answer this question...

I have an 87, I put 31's on it now it feels slow as crap. I am wondering if I need to swap gears. How do I do it which ones do I need? what if I want to drop it and turn it into a lowrider, do I still need new gears? I found a set of gears from a Nissan will they work? How do I find out what kind I have? Does anyone know a good place to find gears? I want gears? Anyone have gears they want to sell me?

Here's some more TRD stuff that's VERY important.

Since Downey is gone, so is his cable locker.

This is where Inchworm and 12Voltguy come in.

This link has everything you need to swap the TRD in. Studs, gaskets and wiring harness.

http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/index.php?cPath=25_62

12Volt gut has the switches, and some other cool stuff: http://12voltguy.com/web/index.php?o...hk=1&Itemid=43

There is also a cool post in IH8Mud about a guy using the FACTORY antenna switch as a E locker actuator

...But I can't get it right now..
