Unhappy Dropping '82 motor in '86 truck?

I have a complete 22r that I was told was an '87 that I bought for my '86 4x4. I even saw the truck this motor came out of and it was an '87. After I went and bought the new timing kit, I finally got around to taking the timing cover off and guess what? 2 row timing chain! So now I have a motor from 81-82 era. Will this motor still drop into my truck? The truck is standard model with a blown-up 22r that came with it. Nothing fancy. I need to figure out something before I tell the wife. She hates this project already.

Don't know if it's the same in all states, but I'm pretty sure in CA, you're not allowed to put in an engine that's older than the vehicle. That doesn't mean some don't do it, but I'm sure it can cause all kinds of problems with DMV, insurance, police, etc.

hope you got the manifolds etc with it...i think the bolt patterns for some of that stuff is different if it is actually an early 22R.

Also you can get double row timing chain kits for newer 22R's so it highly possible it is an '87 22R...too bad it's not EFI

Red face

I do have the manifolds, everything came with it minus the radiator. Thanks guys. I still need to pull the exhaust off the head and double check the ports to make sure of my year.

The states really have no say in the matter. It's Federal law that prohibits that.

Remember that states can always creat tougher laws than the Federal law (California's emissions laws for example), however they can't "undo" Federal law, that is create a lesser law. Well they can, however the Federal law is still in effect.

This comes up here really often, that is the whole subject of emissions and removing emissions equipment. You'll always get some totally uninformed person that says something like "well my state doesn't do emissions checking so it's ok"

Like OC said, you can convert a one row chain to a two-row, so it could be an '87 with the two-row conversion.

Question

I do have one more question. The clutch plate. The motor I have (possible '82) had the clutch plate with it. How will I know if this will work with the '86? I do have the clutch plate that came with the truck also, so if one is different will the 86 bolt up to the older block? Don't know if I made any sense there or not.
