Driveshaft Direction?

I took my rear driveshaft off and I totally forgot which direction it goes. Or does it matter? Does the slip go near the diff or the tcase?

Truck is a 1980 4x4 if it matters.

ive seen them both ways, but i'm pretty sure the correct way is slip to the t-case. a buddy of mine has his the other way and claims its so gravity will help water and other stuff not stay trapped. i dont really think it matters as long as the shaft is in phase.

thanks for the help! I can see running it slip at the diff for the mentioned water reasons but I would think that running it at the tcase would keep the splines off the rocks.

Most likely you forgot to put on any match marks to get it back on the same way.

Might be good to search getting your drive shaft in phase.

you are right, but I didn't replace the U joints, just removed the driveshaft. That is the next project, and I will be sure to mark this time. Unless the trend continues that the previous owner didn't do a thing right on this truck. So yeah I better research how to do that correctly.

slip joint goes to the transfer case it helps to take some of the load off of your rear output shaft.
