Question Difference between 22r & 22re

Is there a difference in short blocks?
I have a 90 4runner with a 22re thats noisy in the bottom end. So far all i have found affordable that runs good in my area is a mid 80's 22r. Will it work if i use a 22re head, intake, etc?

No it will not work unless the engine is after 1985. In 1985 the engine changed. The block is taller on your 1990 and the head is shorter. If the engine is 1985 or newer you are ok. Otherwise you cant do it.

No. You cannot use the 84 engine in you 1990.

You could always rebuild the one you have. Ted from engine builder has complete kits for around 300 bucks. Look into that. Where are you located.

Nope. Can't bolt your EFI intake to the 22R. Square holes on EFI, round holes on carbbed, 22R head.

Keep looking for a 22RE.

Just curious, since I think I may be in the market for a block - How can I tell if a block is a 22R or a 22RE? Also, I'm assuming that as mentioned earlier, an 85+ 22R is an acceptable block? How would I tell the difference between an 84- and an 85+?

Thanks,
KYle
