Did I BLOW MY ENGINE?? PLEASE HELP
#1
Truck: 1985 Toyota XtraCab
Engine: 22r
Modifications: 32/36 Weber Carb
Maintenance:
Headgasket
Water pump
Oil pump
All hoses
All belts
All filters
Rebuilt head
Replace timing chain/guides
Just today I realized my truck was leaking coolant. I had taken it to a mechanic shop to replace the oil pump, and didn't realize it was leaking coolant until it almost overheated 2 weeks later. I saw that coolant was leaking from the water pipe and the bolts were missing! I took out the distributor/power steering bracket assembly to get to the water pipe and assembled the engine back together. After I tried to start it, it stumbled and white smoke started coming out of the carb! I really don't know what to do here? Is the timing off? Did I mess up my engine?? Is there anyway to set the base timing? I tried to set the engine by rotating it to "0" and I tried starting it after this and the smoke came out of the truck, so I stopped. Any and ALL help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Mark

Not ANOTHER 180 distributor thread...
1, I can't think of a pipe that requires you to remove the distributor to gain access to... But never mind that...
And 2, I think it's impossible to pull a dist and replace it w/o messing it up.
And 3, where I think this thread is going.

Right, and OP, 4 cylinder 4 cycle engine... With a 1, 2, 3, 4 firing order...
Though the physical piston will be at "TDC" it could be at a different process in the 4 cycle process.
And how you tell that is by the brains of the operation... The cam.
If the cam dowel is at 12:00 it's at TDC. #1 is set at it's compression stroke.
If the cam is at 6:00 and the crank is still at 0, it's at B-TDC. #4 is at it's compression stroke, and #1 is at it's exhaust...
And it's because of this, the problem of confusing #1 with #4 happens all the time.

I would stop and not do anything till I confirmed the dist was in right.
I would remove my valve cover, and rotate the engine until the crank read "0" and the cam dowel was at 12:00.
Then you can put your dist back in, making sure the button was pointing at the #1 plug on the dist cap.
Make you a little paint mark on the dist where 1 would be, then remove the cap.
At that paint mark is where you want the dist to be with the crank at 0 and the cam dowel at 12:00.

Thank you very much for all the help. This was my first time dealing with this situation. I did just like you said and it started right up!! It is running rich, I just have to adjust the timing now. Thanks again!

good stuff tried 4x2. The 180 switch happens a lot Laser17 so you're not the only one. Good to hear its running right again. Make sure you follow proper procedure to set the timing.

and the proper procedure for tuning that carb.
tried4x2signN sometimes you just crack me up. Pretty good though, I would been having him check to make sure the plug wires were not crossed first.

same issue but still cant figure out
ok lets start with i began with replacing my timing chain with the metal guide kit. was very carful to keep every thing in line but made the rookie mistake of putting the crank gear for the chain on backwards (yes i know stupid i always rush things). well the chain broke when i went to start it. so took everything back apart and found the crank gear broke a tooth and the chain broken. so went back to putting it all back together.
so here is the issue the engine wont start and i get white smoke out the carb when i put it back together crankshaft was at TDC, with #1 piston at compression, camshaft at 12:00 with both valves closed, and re did dist. at #1 so what i am asking is what am i missing to get it to start and run well. thank you who ever helps
