Caliper Upgrade Question

I read here that the V6 pickups had larger calipers than the 4cyl, so I snagged a pair from a 1990 V6 4wd at the local pick and pull to mount on my 93.

I went to put them on last night and I can't see the slightest difference between the two other than the numbers in the casting.

Is this actually an upgrade?

V6 calipers have 4 large pistons.
4cyl have 2 small and 2 large pistons.

Unless yours were already upgraded. The V6 calipers have 4 pistons.

Look up calipers of different years in the RockAuto.com catalog. It will tell you exactly what size pistons they used. The 93+ ones (I think) had even larger pistons than the earlier V6 calipers, but I'm not sure that they fit.

What you just said is the limits what I found, but I can't tell a difference, visually, between the calipers and I wanted to know if there was a way to distinguish them just by looking.

Research on other sites would tell me that the bigger calipers have the S12W casting number. I guess I'll look at the casting numbers and measure the piston diameters when I get a chance.

You are probably going to need to upgrade vacuum assist booster and mastercylinder, steel brake lines will help too. Been planning on this for awhile myself, don't like my brake feel neither.

I haven't been so concerned with feel as with stopping power! I'll do one piece at a time, if the calipers don't get me there, the master cylinder is still at the yard... for now.

The smaller (4cyl) calipers have one large and one small piston per side. They are different enough to be noticeable.

According to Rock Auto, the part numbers for calipers from a 1990 V6 4wd and my 1993 4cyl 4wd are the SAME.

They don't look like the ones in RB's link. They look to have 4 equal size calipers, 2 on each side. And the castings have some fins. I'm thinking I've got another set of what I already had.

Here's what the old calipers look like. Granted they came off a SFA, but those calipers were what my IFS 4cyl calipers looked like. I upgraded to V6 calipers that I got out of a junkyard and rebuilt them using the above as a guide(https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...ebuild-186747/).

Well you could search. This has been covered before. Feel of when you push the brake and the vehicle don't stop fast enough and you start looking for where you can swerve to miss the car in front of you. Good luck.

Then either somebody upgraded for you OR they started coming that way. Regardless, you should get the dual diaphragm booster. That was the biggest improvement in the brakes for me.

My 86 4Runner has a solid axle swap, can i swap the larger calipers on to it with the stock rotors ?, or would i need to swap the rotors out for the vented later model rotors ?, i already have a brake booster and master cylinder from a 93 4Runner on my 4Runner and it did make a diference, but im always looking to improve things.

I'm the 2nd owner, and the PO didn't mention any brake upgrades. That, and the fact that the part numbers match at RockAuto would make me think that it came off the line that way.

Interesting. Looks like I've got some nice calipers to sell.

Your going to need to swap in vented rotors from a landcruiser or modify the front so the it can run the IFS rotor and hub. This will require you to switch the way your calipers mount so the will bolt to the outside of the axle mounts. I don't really like the looks of the last set up. You can get the LC vented rotors $40ish for two.
