Cab swap
I'm in the process of swapping a 90 cab onto a 91 pickup. The 90 is just a base model and the 91 had some options.Both 22re 5 speeds. The 91 has a box on the passenger side frame rail that almost looks like the power steering. It has lines running back to rear of the truck and lines running to the power steering. Can anyone tell me what this is for? Can I get rid of it? It has a plug plugged into it that the other cab doesnt have so i dont think i can plug it in. Also the 91 has the vacumn system for the 4x4. Can i get rid of this and just put my aisin manual hubs on it instead? Any help would be great.

This is a bit technical... IMO, it needs to be moved to a tech forum so it'll get more traffic.
Maybe the cab swap tech section?
I brought up the thing on the frame rail you're talking about for the life of me I don't know... And without knowing what it's even called, I don't know where to start looking for it...

The thing on the frame rail has to do with the rear ABS... (I'm almost sure)
And weren't you the one with a post about two different rear diffs and I told you how to block off the ABS sensor?

I wondered if it was for the abs but found it funny it has lines running to the power steering pump. If this box was for the abs could i do the same as the rear and just leave it unplugged?

oh shucks dude... I just remembered...
You said one truck was 22RE, 5 speed AND ADD?
That's the G58... And it has a chain driven case... You can look at the C/T A/Tm code in the door jam or under the hood to confirm, but it's a waste of time...
That might have something to do with that extra wire... No, that is it. It tells the sillynoids to open and pull a vac on the ADD to lock the axle.
Trouble and check engine lights being on is crossing my mind right now...
Good luck... B/c you will need it...

Yeah its turning into quite the project lol. So would i be better of changing the tranny and t-case when i have the cabs off? And if i'm not gonna bother with have the abs can i remove that box and also put the power steering pump of the other truck on this one?

This is confusing the living out of me....
You want to put the 90 on the 91 FRAME right? (not pickup, BTW)
The 91 has the ADD G58 and ABS junk, right?
Then you'll be fine... You will be using the 90's wiring anyway and that's what's killing me here....
Just swap cabs and remove the ABS and use the tranny the 90 came with...
Follow me here... When you swap the cabs you swap the engine and tranny it came with to...
Like this: 87 Turbo 4WD... On 85 frame and axles...
You MUST use the 22RTE when you swap the cabs over b/c that's what the cab's wired for... It's absolutly POINTLESS to rip all the wiires out for a cab swap... B/c that's what you'd have to do in order to run ANY OTHER engine besides a 22RET...
Same principal applies for the trannys...

The 91 has the ADD G58 and ABS junk, right?

Yeah thats the plan now.I removed the body and box of the 91 today. I was gonna do all new gas and brakes lines anyway so i will ditch that abs box and use my power steering pump of the of the 90. Gonna switch the tranny while the bodys and boxes are of makes things easier.So can i just ditch all the vacumn hoses and stuff for the add system since i am going to put the manuel hubs on it? And just leave the add motor on the front diff?

ok, once more you're confusing me...
If you're going to be using the wiring harness from the NON ADD cab, and the NON ADD diff... There will not be any wiring for the ADD stuff... or need to even retain it...
Your 4WD switch will work via the wiring harness the cab has, and the 4WD sensor the tranny that came in that truck had...
And how did the ADD vac lines and stuff find their way into that 90 cab?
The ADD pertains to the cab... If you're swapping cabs to a non ADD one... Then there is no ADD anymore...

I keep getting confused by you. I'm putting the 90 base model on the 91 chassis which has the add and abs which i stated in my first post. I never said anything about using the non add diff thats why i asked if i could put the manual hubs on it and just get rid of the vacumn lines and stuff.

It's 3 bolts, man... As long as you have a ADD diff... you have to lock the collar either by pulling a vac and blocking off the vac line. Or by doing that band clamp mod that's in yet another forum here...
The ADD is just a box on the side of the long shaft side of the axle. The collar is actuated by a vacuum diaphragm.

As long as you lock it at that point, it's next up to the hubs to be locked for 4WD.
The ADD is the "hubs" for the "automatic locking hubs" or shift on the fly...
The ADD "hubs" are just hubs you can't unlock...
But most guys swap the ADD diff out when they go to manual hubs... You don't have to, but I would...
No need to convert all that stuff over... And once again, you won't even be wired for it...

Ok i was told by a guy today that i could just stick the manual hubs on and that would be it. i guess i will be swapping the diffs too. To swap the diffs do i just pull the axle shafts then unbolt the 3 rd and bolt the other back in or is there alot more to it?

Not a lot to it... Just the 3 torque mounts... And the CV's.
You'll be better off... That's one more part that can't fail, it'll be simpler and it'll be stronger.

Went to remvove the diffs today and the nuts are rusted that bad on 2 of the mounts that i think the only way to get them of would be to cut them. If its the same on the good frame i doubt i will be able to get at them to cut them because the motor is still in.
