OK...rather than installing a new,way over priced,power steering pump. I've opted to purchase ($14),a pump seal/bearing rebuild kit. After researching the removal/installation procedure in the 'ol Chilton manual. I found out that a bleeding process needs to be done and that the process can be very tricky. As the power steering pump provides pressure for the rear anti-lock brakes.
I've wondered for 4 yrs now,why my brake pedal pressure sucks. Now I know. Power steering pump leaks. Thus losing pressure for the rear brakes.
My question is. Is this more of a project than I'm bargaining for? I have a lot of mechanical background,but after reading the following paragraph from Chilton. I have concersn of doing this on my own.
Please read: From The Chilton Toyota Pickups/Land Cruiser/4Runner 89-96 repair manual. Suspension and Steering page 8-25.
"Vehicles equipped with Rear Anti-Lock (RWAL) brakes use a different bleeding procedure than those not so equipped. Bleeding the RWAL system requires the use of an electronic brake tester,an exspensive unit usually found only at dealers".

Has anyone ever had to do this surgery on the power steering pump removal/installation?
If so...did you have to go through this rain dance procedure? Bleeding the power steering,bleeding the brakes,and having it tested with the foremention Toyota super power,eletric brake tester?
Can life get any more complicated?
All I wanna do is stop the PS from leaking.
Any suggestions?

I swapped out my power steering pump when my old one came apart on me. I picked up a good used toyota pump for 40 bucks. Install was just unbolting and bolting back up. Turned the wheels lock to lock a ton of times and added lots of ATF. No problems at all since then....

 

But jay, the trucks didn't come with RWAL....atleast my old '91 3.0 DLX longbed didn't.

Dutchboy, to answer your question, yes. Those of us that have RWAL on our 4runners, (I think all the 4runners have RWAL, but not sure on that), have a totally different bleeding procedure. My '91 FSM says to 1) use the conventional ps bleeding procedure. 2) a: Bleed the brake system with the engine running. 2)b: blled the system with the engine off. 3) bleed the ps system agian, using a Toyota A.B.S. actuator checker, and sub wire harness.

I can give you the SST numbers, and scan the whole procedure page from my FSM for you, if you'd like to see it.

 

Well, yes my truck does have rear anti-lock. But that doenst mean it actually works....

 

Well, than exxxcuuuuuuuuuse me!!!!! Well, like I said, my '91 truck didn't, but then it was a DLX, not an SR5, so I didn't have all the fancy bells,whistles, and new fangled equipment on mine......

 

i dont get what the power searing has to do with the rear brakes at all how are they working together??? i know that honda does but thats on the aws prelude thingy yota has the same or what?

Just a 22re....the power steering pump creates hydraulic pressure for the RWAL. The fliuds never cross paths,but within the plumbing,it creates the pressure that is needed for the RAWL.

Just another way of monkey wrenching the consumer in the long run.
4runnerfreak...It sounds as if this project should be done at the dealership. Seeing how that's the only place that has possesion of the electric brake checking tool. Is this tool available to the public,w/out me having to refinance or give up my next born?
Chilton says this tool is very expensive and usually onlty found at the dealership?
How did you work around that rather important step in the procedure?

 

I don't know how or why the power steering works in conjunction with real anti-lock braking system either. I just don't know that much 'bout those systems myself, but I'm diffently curious 'bout it,though.

pressure from the ps pump is used to override the rear brake pressure thus causing them to act as if they were being released.
