brake light problem

I have a 94 4x4 v6 extracab pickup. My brake lights stay on all the time. I tried looking in the owners manual, but could not find any answers. The lights drained my battery, the only thing I could do was remove the fuse in the kick panel. I did, however, notice a broken black plastic piece on the floor where the brake pedal is. I could not find where the piece came from. I am hoping someone could give me some advice.

Thank you

Check the brake light switch for adjustment. Or possibly it may be broken.

Usually a part of the upper brake pedal makes contact with a normally closed switch that controls the brake lights. The switch has a spring-loaded plunger and the brake pedal holds that plunger in unless you move the pedal, then the plunger extends, switch closes and brake lights come on. Look for the switch (it'll be the things with wires attached to it) up high on the brake pedal arm. I ran into a problem with mine once where the switch was adjusted too tight to the pedal. When I had the cruise control engaged and hit a bump in the road, that would jiggle the pedal enough to cause the switch to close for an instant and that would cause the cruise control to drop out. Real PITA cruising along at 65 then wham as the gas pedal would release and you were slowing down.

Thank you fellas, I have found the problem. It IS that little hard plastic piece that pushes the brake light switch. Im glad it isn't an expensive problem to fix. I just have to find another piece. Gonna hit up the junk yards in the area.
