you want the #1 and #4 up. also when putting the dist back in, I did it very last, have the crank and cam set, everything bolted down. mark on the cam gear should be a 12 o'clock, mark on the dampener pulley at the 5 (theres numbers on the oil pump housing) you want to set the timing with crank and cam before you put the rocker arms on, and the chain. to put the chain on i used a small pry bar (large flat head screwdriver) to over come the tensioner and slid it on the cam.

when you're pretty much ready to run it, to slid the distributer in set the rotor at 12, and when it slides in it will move to about the 10 spot (#1 plug wire) have the bolt that holds it down in the middle and in loose, so that you can change the timing advanced or retarded accordingly

as for the AC you should be able to just take it off, oil cooler? only oil coolers i know of are for automatic transmissions which are under the radiator. most automatics tcase will have an aux oil cooler for the tcase. but those lines wouldn't be any where near the AC compressor or the lines

there should only be 1 notch on it, use white out to make it pop out more. but there shouldn't be more than 1. also when setting the timing make sure you're not 180degrees off

when setting the timing you want it at TDC compression stroke, theres also TDC for the exhaust stroke, hence 180 degrees off

I hear ya, so if #1 & #3 are at TDC doesnt it mean that 2&4 TDC would be the 180 on timing?

4 stroke engine: intake v, compression ^, power v, exhaust ^.
( "v" piston going down, "^" piston going up)
TDC for compression and exhaust is the same on all 4 pistons, but the cam sprocket mark will be at the 12 o'clock spot for #1 TDC (when the head is on)

compression and power the valves are closed, intake the intake will be open, and exhaust the exhaust will be open.

Haha. Something would be awfully wrong if #1 and #3 were up at the same time.

You would have figured it out either way. #1 cant be up without #4 being up as well. Same goes for 2 and 3 together.
