another slow 22re...
Hello all. Been lurking around here in the shadows for a bit, but now I have my own truck and wanna post...so here's my question...I just bought a 87 runner 22re/auto/4wd, etc. Ok, so I know that it's not exactly fast(I'm still getting used to it, I'm coming from a bmw ///M3...), but I seem to think that it's slower than the rest. It purs like a kitten without a stutter and generally runs great, but I struggle really bad just trying to get up a hill on regular roads with a 45 miles per hour speed limit. I feel like it's heavily underpowered, like the trans downshifts just to get up that hill from 35 miles per hour...and by the time it gets there, I'm at the top of the hill lol. Also, the other night I went wheeling with a few friends and tried to pull a suburban out of some rutts. Not only would it not budge, but later that night I got stuck in relatively the same spot as the chevy. So I put it in 4 low, and it wouldn't move. Wouldn't even rev past 2k rpms...so i put in 2wd, and it did the same thing. The rears wouldn't even spin! It was so embarrassing...thing is, I was in some really thick mud the weekend before, and all 4 wheels sprayed mud all over the place. The thing was covered. What do you guys think my problem is? I did a small tune-up(Spark plugs, wires, oil, etc.), but I haven't felt any difference. Of course, I haven't taken it on the trails since the tune up either, so I dunno...any thoughts guys? Love the site btw!

its called should have got a 3.0 but people hate on them for no apart reason well i dont really know the prob maybe throttle cable , throttle body , or like you said that motor is way to small for a 5000 pound truck.

the autos are slow... with my 22re 5 speed ive pulled out burbans, ive towed a camaro, used to tow a boat all the time, and have towed a motorhome with it. figures why my tranny died before the engine.

Well I love this motor, I'm just frustrated with the power it's not making. I mean I have a buddy down here in Mob town that has a runner with the same motor that pulled a stuck chevy K5 on 44's out of a stretch of 4ft deep soup and rutts. That same guy also is running 38's on his runner w/22re, and it pushes them fine compared to my stock rig on 'econo' 31's(no tread). I think it has something to do with the incident that happened the other night, with it not revving past 2k rpm. What would cause that? I mean the rear wheels wouldn't even spin in 2wd...and yes, the front hubs were locked(I'm not(quite)that dumb) lol.

maybe...didnt think of that. but would that result in a power loss that bad? i mean it wouldnt even rev past like 2100rpm or so. no spinning tires, no movement at all...hell it wouldnt even lurch forward. i just dont know.

Yeah I've had one get clogged bad enough that I couldn't go over 10MPH. Replaced it and it was amazing the difference.

Yeah, deffinately sounds like somethings wrong. I ran 35X12.5's on my 1988 stock 22RE automatic. Its no power house but it could go through mud/water up to the headlights no prob, and ive pulled a few trucks out mud holes. Mine did seam pretty gutless when i first got it too, like id try to go up like a fairly steep grade and id just stop halfway and it would be trying to power up but wouldnt move. Things I did were replace air filter, clean throttle body, replace exhaust right up to manifold(manifold straight to muffler no cat converter), plugs, wires, i also sea foamed it haha, also took my tcase apart, it wasnt fully going into 4wd cuz of the crappy linkage, after that it would shift down and had decent power. Enough to spin the front and both rears after I put a spool in. And Mine is 310 XXX without a rebuild, but i just blew it up so its getting rebuild now
