97" electric diff in a 86?

I have a 1986 4x4 ifs pick-up (4cyl, EFI with 8" gears iirc) and would like to upgrade rear end with "any" locking device. I found localy a electric locker out of a 97 4runner...is there any chances it may fit ? i know i may have to keep my gears to retain same gear ratio.

thanks.

You have to modify your housing for it to fit.....

IMHO you would be better off to go with an Aussie locker, it will be less of a headache

A search would probably find you the answer...

With some work:

less work to convert the housing than to convert the rear end from coil to leaf or leaf to coil. Not to mention I think they would be a different width as well.

By "rear end", assume you mean the whole rear axle housing. If so, different suspension (coils vs. leafs), so chop off all the coil/link attachment points then add on the leaf spring perches. Also, different e-brake cable and brake line routing as I recall, so need to deal with that. Can be done, but a fair bit of work.

e lok retro

i believe you need a special kit to put one in a 4 cyl axle housing if you found a 3.0 housing all you would have to do is cutout a spot for the e locker motor and add a stud. the tacomas with the e-lockers and the 3.0s have the same size ring gear (8") i plan on doin the same to my truck this summer make sure you have the right ratio!

the thing i am wondering about the aussie locker types, and also the lock right unit, how it behaves when the truck is heavy loaded and the tires cannnot "spin" in a turn...

As an example, my truck has a custom 5x8.5 heavy steel bed with upgraded leafs and i often load it up MAD...its a truck after all....will the locker give up or is there chances i could break my axles in a turn ? that would be one reason i would prefer the e-locker over a "dumb" locker...

comments on that would be very appreciated (i searched, plz...)

A lockright or aussie will unlock in a corner as long as your foot is off the gas.

You'll be fine. Might chirp a tire here or there. But unless your on 37's or 39" tires you shouldn't be worried about breaking a Yota rear axle. The locker is engaged at all speeds if there is torque coming from the drivetrain, think, foot on gas or foot off of gas.
