87 4runner..heard a pop now no power to the wheels

Went wheeling today, think I heard a pop, now I have no power to the wheels in 4wd or 2wd. Manual transmission (w56).

I think I hear a "whirring" sound underneath when I give it some gas and might have heard something rattling around like small bits.

My buddy thinks it's a planetary gear in the transmission.

Thoughts?

Red face

Who can say to you look at things .

So you have neither the front or rear driveshaft turning ??

Just what where you doing when it broke ??

Could be anything from the clutch back .

With all the wheels off the ground in 4 High do things move if you spin the rear tires in gear .

that will tell you the case and differentials are good

wyoming nailed it as usual. We can't tell you where to start looking. There 100 things it could be. Get the tires off the ground and start trying to find where things arn't right. Or take it to a shop and open your wallet.

I really don't know exactly when it happened. I made it over the pass and then on the way down the other side, I thought I heard a pop and thought "that ain't good" but she kept driving fine. I stopped, snapped some photos..

If you're lucky, it might just be that the center broke out of your clutch friction disk.

I would never be that lucky.

I got all four wheels up, 4H, in 1st gear. When I spin the front tires, the front drive shaft moves. When I spin the back wheels, the rear drive shaft moves a little...sometimes. I can turn the rear wheels with the rear drive shaft though.

Sounds like you snapped something inside the transmission.
When in 4wd do the front and rear drive shafts both turn? That would eliminate a problem with the transfer case.

yeah, in 4wd I can turn the rear drive shaft with the front wheels. It doesnt engage like the front but it still moves.

Not sure if that has anything to do with it. I've never replaced a clutch or transmission.

Definitely not dirt. Looks almost like a piece of brake pad so maybe a chunk of clutch? Came out in one big piece but I broke it in half..

Actually, spinning the front wheels move the rear wheels just fine but spinning the back wheels only moves the fronts somewhat. Like it engages to move them but doesn't keep spinning them like the fronts do.

That probably made it more confusing. I'll see if I can get a video posted.

Yea that doesn't help. If your transfer case is good the drive shafts will both turn while in 4wd.
