Yeah the fuel filter is a pain. I was saving that for last since replacing and checking all the other parts was fairly straight forward.

If you are lucky and have a wheel well access panel then it's not bad. Otherwise, bleh.

I thought about remounting the filter somewhere saner but we would need to replumb the lines so they would reach.

Well we drove the 4 runner to it's new home. It's still having problems starting. What happens is this.
Try and start the 4runner. It turns over starts to idle and then dies. Repeat a few times. I walk away for 5 mins and then it starts up immediately at the normal idle speed.

What I've done so far:
Replaced the coolant temperature switch
Checked the cold start switch (it's within the range)
Checked the solenoid resistor (it's reading high on the resistance)
Ground a few loose wires that should have been grounded
ECU was check as above

Any suggestions?

Try the fuel pump test jumper:

If that helps, check the Air Flow Meter:
and Circuit Opening Relay:

Might have an intermittent dropout there that is causing the fuel pump to shut off.

Hmm we've checked those things a month or so ago but I've been banging around inside the 4runner quite a bit.

I'll recheck all those.

Thanks for the links!!!

From the AFM
(in Ohms)
E2-Vs 66.4
E2-Vc 179.5
E2-Vb 282
E2-Tha 1539 - air temp is 80F, 4runner in direct sun all afternoon
E1-Fc infinite

We pulled out the new fuel pump recently and noticed a redish-brown sludge all over the filter and bracket. There is some at the bottom of the tank as well. I am wondering if the fuel filter is clogged again. We already replaced one.

The solenoid resistor read at
4.0 and 4.1 Ohms which is a little high

OCR Readings fall within the ranges given. Also I can hear it clicking on start once I reinstalled it Fuel pump I can hear it running (we have the easy access cover in under the back seat).

And just did the Fuel Pump Jumper Test.

Started right up. I could hear all the relays clicking and the fuel pump humming along.

First time posting on here. oh yea!! Im having similar problems with my 4runner. while driving my check engine light came up and my engine died right away. I could start it with a rough idle but as soon as i gave it gas it would die again. cant figure out if its an electrical problem or something with the fuel. Hope someone can help us out!

First step would be to pull the stored check engine code(s) and see what they might tell you:

@8runner6

My check engine light never came on and we got an all clear when I checked the error codes. Like 4Crawler said start there.

If you look through this whole message thread you'll find what amounts to a check list of things to look at.

After the engine codes
1) Check Fuel Pump
2) Check relays and solenoid resistor
3) Loosen Aux. fuel injector and see if it sprays gas
4) Replace fuel filter
5) Replace spark plugs

Or some order like that. We worked from the back of the runner to the front checking and replacing as needed. You can also check the brain box too. Check all your grounds!

Glad it worked out for you. Similar thing happened (Throttle position sensor tho) on my other vehicle. I took mechanic's word without seeing it for myself and purhased replacement TPS. When about to remove and replace, I unplugged the connector and felt no resistance. Pushed it back in, and no more problem! That TPS is getting returned.
