4WD engagement issues

heres the situation.

93 toyota four runner 5spd manual 6cylinder motor

add obviously. i push the stick into four wheel (h or L) doesnt matter.
front drive shaft spins. stock hubs (always locked in to my understanding).
rigged actuator with hose clamp today about 10 mins ago.

i didnt refill the gear oil yet but i tested the front and i could spin the wheels freely in 4l or 4h.

all the vacuum hoses appear to be correctly routed.

i think the front diff is blown, any other ideas? (please have a couple haha)

thanks guys

TOYOTA never made a four runner. Its a 4Runner.

Sounds fine.... Its called an open differential

sounds like either your ADD isnt engaging or you're describing an open diff. depending on how i read through the lines of your post...

tofer- i thought i had elminated the system by locking the actuator in place with the hose clamp.

dropzone- thanks, that does make alot more sense.

If your diff was blown to the point that it won't spin under power, it would make a bunch of noise when it's forced to spin when you're rolling and then it would grenade. How does it do when you try to spin it by hand when the tranny's in neutral while in 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo?

both front wheels off the ground, the wheels spin either way whether in 2h,4h, or 4l, also tried all of those again with the shifter in 1st. same result. the whole time the front driveshaft remained locked when in 4wheel.

this is my understanding of the system
tcase
driveshaft
front diff
vacuum lock actuator
hubs

so if my driveshaft spins from the tcase then both of those work. i locked the actuator, and the hubs are locked. so those work. is there another piece im not getting

is this all correct or am i wrong somewhere, im not much of a mechanic, all i know is from what ive read here.

i know this will probably seem like a silly question but it never hurts to ask--did you slide the lock over to the correct side prior to checking your engagement? i'm sure you did but i didn't see where you actually checked that--

I found a tutorial on this site with pictures and used that. I slid it towards the driver side wheel. Is that correct?

Hmm. you must be right. Maybe that was one of the reasons my 4wd was not working when I bought my 'runner. lol. I didnt look at pics when I bypassed mine, I just took the actuator off and figured it out.
