3rd Member Guru Needed
I have a few questions for someone who knows what they are talking about when it comes to front 3rd members its out of a 1985 front solid axle:
1. In this picture where im pointing at that tab thats holding that thing with all the holes is bent obviously from that thing with all the holes shifting somehow. What caused that and how do i fix it?
2. How difficult is it to pull the whole 3rd apart for a guy who's never done it before (but can do the head gaskets on a 3.slo by himself with minimal issues) and put it back together. And how technical is it?
3. If there is rust on about 6 teeth of the ring gear can i just clean it off and re-use it with no issues?
4. off topic but how do you take the axle shaft out of the birfield once the snap ring is removed???
Thanks so much!

1. Retaining clip to hold in thing with holes on it. It's fine.
2. Very. Seek professional help.
3. Surface rust from air exposure. I wouldn't bother.

Thank you!
1. What caused that thing with the holes in it to shift? and do i need to have it re-aligned or will it function just fine the way it is?
3. You wouldn't bother using the ring gear? or you wouldn't worry about the rust on it?
Thanks again

1. It didn't shift at all. That is a bearing pre-load adjuster. It appears the correct position of the adjuster was in between holes. It is fine as is.
2. You need special tools and knowledge to take apart the carrier assembly. Best bet is to take it to a local diff shop. It's great you already have it off the truck. Maybe you'll need to ship it somplace if you don't have a local pro. I assume you want to install a locker and/or gears, why else take it apart?
3. I'm sure he meant he won't bother cleaning the surface rust of the ring gear. It's fine, it lives in oil.
