Honestly, I would just get the megasquirt now if you will be getting it long term anyways. Get it installed and working with the NA engine so you have a baseline to work from. Then add the turbo.
I say again though, go to a board that actually deals with these cars/engines, they will most likely have a path already paved and know exactly what to do instead of guessing like we are.

Timing advance is just wasted energy that the engine is fighting itself. The best ignition timing would be 0 degress at TDC but in the real world it outruns the flame generally. I do know of some top levels car that do that though.
So the less timing you need to reach max power the better.
Also those new cars are running those kinds of timing during cruise/closed loop. It is generally much lower at WOT.
Add in some boost and it comes down quick. A rule of thumb is that for every PSI of boost you need to remove 1-2 degrees of timing (up until you reach the octane/knock limits of the engine that is).
So if you add 10psi of boost into that setup that normally likes 40 degrees of timing (if it likes that), then you would want to drop the timing down to ~20 degrees to start out with and then slowly raise it back up on the dyno to see what it likes best.
I was running around 15-20 degrees of timing on my 3sgte @ 14psi and adding more didn't gain me much/any power saying that was about all it wanted.

Ya I think the biggest issue is that no matter what we did it still dropped and flat lined at 10:1 by 4200 but I think that's cuz of the turbo ecu kinda hurts making lots of HP when ur drowneding it in fuel. But at least I won't blow it up lol.

Just because it is pig doesn't mean it won't blow up. MR2's are tuned the same way from the factory but plenty of them were blown up before people leanred how to properly mod them.
For example messing with the AFM will lean it out but it also adds timing. Many a motor has been blown with pig rich AFR's and too much timing. Many more then being too lean in the mr2 world.

Lets see a picture of this thing. Before the piston goes through the hood.

But seriously...its time for us to see this beast if you are to continue pimping a celica on a truck forum.

The reason I use yota tech is I mainly work on trucks and there more knowledge on herebthen most forms I've tryed if some one who has put pics up before I have no problem txtinv the pics to them to see if they could get them to up load

I took some videos tonight on my drive back from sacromento if u guys would like to see post ur number and ill txtem to u or pm me ur numbers Texas maybe u could list a few on ur YouTube page for me ill take a video of the car out side and in once I clean it out 250 mile road trip lol

If youre tuning by AFR's it helps to do such with 2 wideband readings. EGT will be a little more accurate. Pull fuel until about 13-1400* EGT's and then start adding timing until toque stops rising (or if you begin to ping) and then back it off a degree or 2. Theres you a pretty quick run down. A pyrometer is how most prefer to tune rotaries, esp when using PowerFC
Why is 40 to much? I dont know a single car that runs 40* of base timing. Most usually run between 10 and 20* base. Maybe near 40* under light load at highway speeds (2500-3000rpm) but will begin to back off as load levels out. Newer cars run more yes but newer cars also employ newer tech for engine management. They also employ newer tech like variable cam timing and lift. All which play factors in the timing curve and what cells the computer will operate in throughout the tables. Comparing your 22r to modern tech is like comparing a musket to a JAGM Missile.
Still... WE WANT PICS! and vidja lol
