Because the price is set, like all prices in a capitalist economy, by what the market will bear rather than by absolute cost of production. They call this process “market forces,” as if they exist outside of themselves, when talking to consumers, but refer to “record profits” when talking to stockholders.

Diesel *used* to be much cheaper than gasoline, until it became popular to put it into consumer vehicles, but several things have happened to change the production cost of the fuel at the pump.

First is the transition to ultra-low sulfur diesel, which adds perhaps five to eight cents per gallon, counting both direct costs — the purchase price of low sulfur oil is higher than oil o lesser quality — and investment costs required to further refine ordinary oil.

The second is taxes. Diesel fuel is essentially the same stuff as heating oil, but is taxed at a higher rate. 18% of the average price at the pump, according to the DOE, is taxes, 54% is the cost of the oil itself, 22% is the cost of refining, and 18% is distribution, marketing, and profit.

Of course many companies sell themselves their own oil, so there may be substantial profit on that transaction as well.

For gasoline, again according to the ODE, 15% of the price is taxes, 55% the cost of the oil, 15% the cost of the refining process, and 14% distribution, marketing, and profit.

In 1990, the average price of gasoline was $1.16 per gallon, the average cost of diesel fuel was $0.73 per gallon, and the average cost of heating fuel was $1.06.

In 2002, the average cost of gasoline was $1.36 per gallon, the average cost of diesel fuel was $0.76 per gallon, and the average cost of heating fuel was $1.13.

in 2005, the average cost of gasoline was $1.87 per gallon, the average cost of diesel fuel was $1.95 per gallon, and the average cost of heating fuel was $2.05.

As you can easily see, the *relative* prices have varied all over the map.

The obvious inference is that, despite the higher taxes on diesel fuel in comparison to heating oil, and very similar costs of production, people are more driven to heat their homes than they are to drive their diesel cars, so the companies can charge more.

Likewise, in 1990, diesel cars were uncommon, and the primary users of diesel fuel were commercial, driving large trucks or tractors.

Presumably, a fellow filling up a truck with 300 gallons of diesel fuel every day or two is in a better position to drive a hard bargain than is a fellow filling his VW diesel with 16 gallons one a week or so.

Haha I love my 3.0 for wheeling especially, my buddy with his 22RE always gets mad at me. When I say More Wheel spin with a 3.0

The only thing I dnt like about my 3.0 is how much of a PITA it is to do anything on it..Literally 20 different things to get to one part. but things dont really break that often.

Like everyone says with any motor. you take care of her , she'll take care of you.

i've owned an '86 22RE 4x4 on 31's (sig)

and a '92 4runner with 33s and 4.56's with the 3vz (sig)

my 4runner could do circles around my pickup, EVERYWHERE.....EXCEPT cornering...i could corner like a sports car in my pickup, but not the 4runner.

4runner has ALOT more power, and gets about 15mpg if i'm being easy on it...whereas my pickup got around 18mpg if i was bein easy, and 20mpg after i rebuilt the carb.

is the more power worth it? well, it sure as hell comes in handy thats for sure

PLUS, i have the possibility of a 5vz swap

my issues with the 22-re is where i take it they seem to love to blow up. i went through 4 of them b4 i got me a 3vz. i had it for a while and then its 6th cylinder started only havin 40 lb compression so i swapped motors with a 3vz-e. aint ran since... but then i got 2 more trucks... both had the 3vz-e and never had a lick of problem out of them. they bore when i need em to bore an they go where i need em to go. one place that i blew a 22re at the 3zve walked right through with some spin but it didnt move the temp guage. so i like the 3vz-e's better. but i coonhunt so ya.

if you want power, dont buy a toyota, simple as that. well except for the new ones, they have some more powerful motors lol

Well a few weeks ago I picked up my first ever Toyota. 92 extra cab v6 5 speed. Thought I was doing good by going v6.... after reading around on the forum I'm starting to 2nd guess my choice. ANyway I'm in the process of the head gasket job right now with 220k on the clock. Despite all the nay sayers I hope this thing makes it to 500k and beyond.

I've owned both, had problems with both but the amount of power the 3.0 has compared to the 22re is enough to justify getting the 3.0 over the 22re. I loved my little 22re and had a drop in k&n, headman header, 2 1/4 in exhaust with a flowmaster 40 series and my stock 3.0 still has more power and similar mileage...

Honestly side by side in the end the 22re is a better engine, it's slower sure, but can take much mor abuse. But that doesn't mean don't buy a 3vze. You just need too buy the right engine for the job. 22re is great for a trail machine, has perfect power ( with the right gears too tire size ratio) too get over obstacles and when that mud part comes just rev the piss out of it and it loves it . All of those situations never seem too work out as well for the 3vze, it doesn't like much of the abuse of stop go, rev like he'll, and idle around all day from what I've found. I mean it can, but It just won't handle it as well as the little 22re. Now on the other hand, most of us DD our trucks, and wheel once in a while right? Well in this day and age when ever car around you has like 200hp, it makes it hard too keep up with a 22re, ask me how I know... Was really frusturating. 3vze on the other hand handles it much better and u can relax allot more lol. One of the key factors between choosing would be " if u live in a area with lots of hills" not a place for a 22re. I lived all around hills, 22re was not bad until a damn hill. 3vze just flies up them in any gear.

So basically as a DD that gets wheeled here and there I'd go 3vze, with some headers too cool better, Toyota red coolant, and make sure you water pump is always in tip top shape. If u wheel allot and the truck is more of a second vehicle kind of thing. Then I would go 22re. I'm pretty sure u can suffer the hills and slowness until u get too the trail, then u can drive it through he'll and back all day and still get home

Personally I say F em both and I'm dropping in a 2JZ with over 2x the power as a 3vze and with some bpu's I can see 400 at the rear wheels
