dude, I have a 3.0, and I love it. mine has 378xxx miles on it (about 125,000 more miles than you have) and it has never had any major problems. 2 PO's, both took extremely good care of it, and now I'm doing the same. mine isn't slow, I have outrun my ex girlfriend's '96 corolla several times in it. granted she has a 4-banger, but my Runner weighs twice what her corolla does, and I can easily run 90mph in 4th gear(roughly 4 grand rpm wise), and accelerate quite well in 5th gear. If I am up to speed, I almost never have to downshift when going uphill, and I don't worry about my engine dying on me. my family and I just returned from a vacation where we drove a total of about 1200 miles over 3 states, at about 70 mph the whole time. Not once did my truck overheat, I did have a blocked fuel filter that I had to change, but that's it. All of this was in 97-103 degree heat also. I trust my '91 4Runner as much as I do my parent's '08 Dodge Ram.

You seem to be determined that the OP NEEDS a 22re JUST because you have one, and you also seem to be hating on the 3.0 because you have seen two of them die close to you. I am on my second one, the first one died on me, but the second one didn't . The first was very poorly maintained. As is the case with ANY vehicle, if you don't maintain it, it will die. For example, my parents had a 1998 Ford Expedition that had 198xxx miles on it before the rear end went out, and we were VERY hard on that truck. As someone said before, don't knock it till YOU try it. Notice, I have not knocked the 22re, because I haven't owned one. Please refrain from knocking the 3.0 further until you own one for a significant amount of time. Not your parents or your buddy, you. (I doubt you will ever own one because you have already formed a bias against them, but still)

Mak im just being silly, you should know that i know its not that bad lol.

Though i kinda find it funny how like 3 or so people before me said something along the lines of ( 3.suck ___________, 22re ____________) and im the only one that got knocked about saying something silly lol its all good though, funny stuff

oyah mak my 22re has been a pile o junk lately because of the o2 sensor. the exhaust leaks from the header being put on wrong, killed it, and it annoyed me because i had to go through hours of work trying to figure it out instead of paying a mechanic lol. so yeah it made me mad about it and yeah i wanted to sell it but now that i have it running wicked sick again, its like old times and i love it. but i still wished i got a 4runner lol. So yeah my 22re was annoying me but if i had money to pay a mechanic to figure it out, or knew what was going on, it would have been running great and i wouldnt be complaining lol. no it rips around now can spin tire, and actually hit some hills and not bogg out so bad lmao.

i only paid 250 for my 22re engine and it did have much over 100k miles when i got it.. i was told the engine came out of a 94.

the engine runs strong no complaints, good enough for daily driving and squeiling the tire off for no apparent reason..

i will say iam ready for a upgrade in the engine and trans dept. sense its 2wd it will be a good sleeper tunner truck..

I have a 22re with 37s and it does amazing....however if you already have the 3.slow i wouldnt switch to the 22re....

But yes i would take the 22re over 3vze any day of the week, it easy to work on more reliable and like everyone said "BULLETPROOF". For ex. a local junk yard here in texas has prolly 10 toyota pickup/4runner and 1 has 22re!!!! Do the math

Ill hook to a 3.0 slow and drag it threw mud holes up hills whereever you want me to take it

I think 22R-E with some mods will do just fine, I drove a 22R-E ext. cab 5speed 4x4... fourwheelin in some muddy field while it was raining...did great. needless to say I think I'm goin 22R-E.

sry 3.0 fans if it fails me that 3.0 is next on my list.

like I said, I'm not knocking the 22re. I imagine it is just as good as the 3vze, and it may be better, who really knows tho?You were the one discrediting an engine that you haven't had much personal experience with, not me. Sarcasm aside, I realize you think little of an engine that outlasts pretty much everything out there except for diesels, but I'm not trying to change your opinion. I guess what got me was the fact that you were trying to tell guys who own and like their 3vze's that they had horrible engines, and were stupid for liking them(at least that's how I read it), and that anyone who even considered buying a 3.0 was a complete idiot. As far as reviews go, yes I believe the 22re does fare better, but then there are people who think that there is no such thing as maintenance, and that an engine can go forever being worked as hard as possible to please the owner. I know several of them, lol. Both engines have their good points, and both have their downfalls, and at this point i think saying much more would be beating a dead horse. (it will happen, I know, but still)
Anyway, lets just all agree that we love our Yotas, and be friends.

lol yes you misunderstood me. i have experience with the 3.0L, maybe not as much as you but i still stand strong that he will be happier with the 22re. dont worry you will not change my opinion lol and i never said or intended anything towards people who own 3vze's. better then owning a ford lol i even said mak92's 3vze was sick lol. your not an idiot for buying a 3vze, but i bet if you knew what you knew now about both engines you might choose the 22re. its funny how you say " As far as reviews go, yes I believe the 22re does fare better" so why didnt you say that from the beginning? lol im not out to get you but you confuse the heck out of me lol only major downfalls to a 22re is the timing chains guides ( easy fix) and the lack of power.

and yes we all love our yotas and we can be friends lol ...... btw its not like i wouldnt buy a 3vze but for a guy with money,an options, and wants to buy his first a toyota, i think he would be best off with the 22re
