And a 3.0 that keeps up with a 3.4?
haha yea i left out good details lol id only get a 22re turbo cuz they are rare, not for speed. and his taco was stock geared with 35x12.5's with an auto tranny and 2WD mines 4wd and he beats the hell out of it. ok and i was exaggerating lol it was like one and a half car lengths lol

my '96 dodge has a 2001 5.9L motor in it..it's got about 257,800miles on it..and a tranny that is starting to go..and i can keep up with my buddies 2006dodge 4x4 with the hemi..both of us floor it...and we stay RIGHT BESIDE EACH OTHER THE WHOLE WAY. of course he has a leveling kit and air bags in the rear (3" lift and lots more towing capacity) 20x9 rockstars, and 33x12.50 grapplers...that's why i can keep up with him lol..he used to blow the doors off my dodge.

anyways back on topic.

my 22R has given me more trouble than anything..it's on it's 2nd blown headgasket..(4th time replacing headgasket...other 2 times were different issues)..and i have taken pretty dang good care of the thing..aside from the one time of me almost sinking it...that was ONCE.

it's been rebuilt..just blew the headgasket the 2nd time while sitting at a grocery store NOT EVEN RUNNING.

it's had carb problems from the start, but that's not related to the 22re lol

other than that it's okay, never left me stranded..i drove it for about 6 miles with a BAD rod knock (rod had over 1/4" of play on the shaft.)

and even drove it into the garage where i rebuilt it..which is about 200yds from where i parked it lol

as soon as the headgasket get's fixed..it's goin to a shop to fix the carb or get a weber..and then it's getting sold. FOR SURE...screw that P.O.S.

Yeah MOPAR!!!! ok sorry I'm a fan

But yes the topic...

Bad rod knock, blowing HG after rebuild...who built the thing, Hellen Keller??

The PO of my 22RE was runnin tap water with antifreeze, the block was badly corroded on the deck. If I would have replaced the HG with the deck looking like that, it would not have lasted long. How was your deck looking?

EDIT!!! Sorry i was on page two and thought i was on the last page

How is it possible that a v6 only takes up as much room as a 4cyl

Im with 91 yota.
MOST people say that they regret buying the 3.0. In the rare case that someone has actually taken care of a motor then its a great motor. But for the most part the people on this forum would rather have a 22re or a 3.4. Just anything but the pain in the ass 3.0.

Now im not saying its JUNK. its still better than most other makes motors, it just has some down falls that cause people to like other yota motors more.

That's what's gettin to me. Opinions are like buttholes, everybody's got one.. I am fine with that, but to call the 3vze a "crap" or "junk" motor.. come on now, that is not necessary. I do love mine. I love working on it, I love driving it. I have put about 120K on it since I've owned it, it has treated me very well.

Yep. That is something we do all have in common.

Because the displacement is not much greater. It has more cylinders but they are smaller.

well ya see..it was corroded whenwe took it apart, but i cleaned that biotch spotless..let it soak in some parts cleaner at my old votech and everything.

well ya see, the mechanic that put it together...he's kinda shady...everyone has ALWAYS said that he's GREAT though (just really slow)..he's never had anything that he's fixed come back because of a related problem. if he doesn't know how to do something though, he'll tell you straight up..and he will not work on the vehicle.

but back on topic..yea wtf is up with toyota lovers talkin crap about toyota's!?

i don't think i ever said that the 22RE was crap..although my 22R is pretty crappy LOL

Haha got it!

Jack, take a look at a 6cyl with the head off if you see one in a yard. The pistons/cylinders are significantly smaller than the 22R block

I cud go either way i have a 3vze right now with 139K on it but my buddy has a 22RE 86 4RUNNER 5 spd with 330K on the original Engine..ive had no problems with my 3.0L so far ive heard separate stories for the motor. But for the 22RE i hear the same stuff easy to work on, cheap for parts/Mods,good gas mileage, very reliable Engine. With the 3.0L its pretty much the opposite. still a good motor but it doesnt really compare to the 22RE..

Thats probably why its only got 40 more horsepower than the 22RE!

But if ur really going to look for a new or different V6.you shud go with the 3.4L 5VZE it has a lot better horsepower/Torque, my '99 has 175K on it and i havnt had any problems with the motor.

what I meant to say was that out of owning 3 3VZE trucks over the years and being on my third 22RE I have had much better luck with the 22re's when it comes to maintenance, MPG and relative longevity before breaking down.

That said, I would much rather own a Toyota with a 3VZE than a Jeep or a Nissan, but in the Toyota family I think the 22RE is a better motor. That's just my personal experience, not really an opinion.

what i was trying to say was that between the two motors (22re vs 3vze) no other engines or car makers. that strait up i think the OP would enjoy the 22re and be much happyer with it. now because some how this thing got thrown at other car makes for some reason? i would much rather have a 3vze pickup or 4runner than any other mid size truck or suv on the market. so don't think im going outside of toyota here lol. since i have had two 3vze's close to me and one 22re so far, i find right away the 22re much better and my 22re has way more millage and mine was treated like a pos before i got ahold of it lol. sorry if a couple of you where offended by me calling the 3vze "junk" or "crap", it just seamed appropriate at the time lol.

If I was currently in the market for an old Toyota truck I would be looking for the lowest mileage 22RE 4WD 5 speed I could find. If not low miles then at least some maintenance records. I don't how close you are to fort collins but this truck looks nice:

im not against the 22re, but i love my 3vze. its got 190,000 on it and it runs strong. just calc.18mpg average on this last tank, and it goes up the hills no probs, half the time with out having to downshift. if my truck had a 22re i would rock with it. but it doesnt so im not. so there. i think the turbo'd 22re is pretty sick.regardless of reliability. 3vze for life blood!
